About the role
We’re looking for a fast-learning and dynamic Director – Product and Regulatory Counsel, based in our San Francisco office, with familiarity with US money transmission licensing (MTLs), payments, banking, and financial services laws to help us continue to drive innovation and accelerate our growth. You’ll be a deeply embedded and strategic advisor to many teams across Nium including Product, Engineering, Compliance, Bank Partnerships, and Marketing.
You’ll help design and build new payments products and services, provide strategic advice about Nium’s legal and regulatory obligations in the North and South America region, and help drive our expansion into new markets. In this role you’ll be the lead counsel responsible for driving Nium’s efforts to obtain US MTLs, as well as licenses in LATAM (including the Brazilian Payment Institution (EMI) license). For the right candidate, this role will include people management responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Reporting to our Global Head of Product & Regulatory Legal, you’ll be lead counsel for driving our legal and regulatory strategy across North and South America (in particular, US, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, among others).
- You’ll lead our efforts to obtain US MTLs and a Brazil EMI license, both of which are key company priorities.
- You’ll partner closely with our global product, engineering and business teams to advise on a range of issues including product development, financial services regulations, payments, consumer protection, market expansion, data privacy and intellectual property.
- You’ll be an ambassador to the business for Nium’s Global Legal Team and help us stay up-to-date on applicable laws and regulations dealing with financial services.
- You’ll be a leader on Nium’s Global Legal Team and will work collaboratively to support Nium’s legal and regulatory structure, strategic partnerships, and client agreements.
- You’ll help build scalable and effective processes for legal review and launch of new products and services.
Requirements
- You have at least 8 years of experience as a qualified lawyer in an in-house legal team, top law firm and/or government agency.
- You have deep familiarity with payments, fintech, or financial services laws and regulations, and have demonstrated experience in obtaining US MTLs.
- You’re a natural leader who has previously managed others (either lawyers or non-lawyers).
- You’re highly collaborative, are inquisitive and solutions-oriented, and have prior experience advising on product development at fast-moving technology companies.
- You’re biased towards action and impact, and no task is too big or too small for you; you can roll up your sleeves and get things done.
- You have exceptional verbal and interpersonal communication skills, can build strong relationships with business colleagues, and can simplify legal concepts and communicate them in easy-to-understand language.
- You exhibit genuine curiosity, are passionate about your work, and enjoy a fast-paced working environment.
- You’re humble with low-ego, have a strong desire to grow and learn, and have a deep commitment to your teammates.
