Role:
You will ensure a productive and safe workplace experience, manage the day-to-day
facility operations and lead efforts on various laboratory improvement projects. The
ideal individual for this role prioritizes working safely in everything that they do, takes
pride in maintaining facility spaces and is energized by providing help and support to
others.

Responsibilities

Laboratory and Facilities Management

    • Establish processes to monitor, service and maintain all facility and equipment needs
    • Ensure efficient operations of all systems, including mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and structural
    • Use creative and problem solving skills to modify floor plans in order to accommodate our rapidly growing team
    • Address all “behind the scenes” challenges in order to provide an efficient and productive work environment for our entire team
    • Lead facility construction projects such as buildouts/ improvements/ renovations, expansions, and relocations and cultivate productive working relationships with third-party vendors, service providers and contractors
    • Review and approve estimates/quotes/bids, architectural drawings, agreements/contracts, leases
    • Inspect construction and installation progress to ensure they are of high quality and in line with established contract specifications
    • Serve as the main point of contact with property management

Safety Management

    • Assume the position of Safety Officer for the company
    • Foster a strong safety culture by ensuring safety policies and procedures are developed, implemented, updated, and followed
    • Ensure that all employees are informed of, comprehend and comply with safety policies
    • Lead continuous process improvements to our Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) program in order to reduce accident/ injury/ illness rates in the workplace
    • Perform root cause analysis of all safety incidents and assist in case management for all reported injuries
    • Detect potential safety, health and environmental hazards and recommend corrective actions or preventative measures
    • Monitor, interpret, and assess existing and emerging safety industry practices and policies and determine operational impacts
    • Maintain a collaborative partnership with all safety regulatory agencies (OSHA, local CUPA, etc.) by serving as the main point of contact and ensuring our facility remains compliant
    • Coordinate safety training sessions and track safety training compliance for the entire company
    • Manage internal and external facility inspections and audits
    • Maintain facility emergency response plans and perform drills to test the plans’ effectiveness

Required experience and skills

    • BS degree in EHS, Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Biology or related fields
    • Minimum 10 years of experience in Laboratory & Facilities management.
    • Experience in biotech startups, research laboratories or a life science company setting is highly preferred.
    • Extensive knowledge of Cal/OSHA safety and occupational health standards
    • A positive and high-energy approach to your role

    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal and presentation skills
    • Organized, detail-oriented, methodical, thorough, approachable
    • Excellent relationship management skills
    • Proficiency at conflict resolution and can remain calm under stressful situations
    • Comfortable with delegating tasks and an ability to exercise authority to influence a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders

Notes

    • To perform this duty the candidate must have the ability to sit, stand, or walk for extended periods of time within the facility. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
