Job Overview:
Reporting to the COO, the VP, Finance and Accounting is responsible for leading the organization's accounting, treasury, audit, and associated process control functions. This role manages a team of finance professionals and oversees relationships with external service providers including tax, audit, and accounting firms. The VP ensures regulatory compliance, provides oversight of investment activities, and manages diverse revenue streams from grants, contracts, and philanthropic contributions. The VP maintains strong cash flow management, implements financial best practices, and develops talent within the finance function.
Responsibilities
- Oversee financial operations including monthly close processes and annual financial statement preparation
- Develop and implement policies and procedures for financial management, including approval authority for ACH and wire transfers
- Provide direct supervision and mentorship to the Staff Accountant, fostering professional development and growth
- Manage relationships with external accounting & audit contractors and other related service providers
- Direct accounts payable/receivable functions and working capital management
- Ensure accuracy and integrity of financial accruals and reserves
- Establish framework for expense management including corporate credit card programs, employee expense reporting, and compliance monitoring
- Lead vendor management strategy and purchase approval processes
- Partner with Staff Counsel to ensure appropriate contract governance and risk management
- Manage enterprise insurance programs and renewal strategies
- Support the COO in audit readiness and response strategies; coordinate management's response to audit findings and support remediation efforts
- Oversee Form 990 preparation and, in conjunction with staff counsel, compliance with public charity requirements
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives and operational excellence across finance and accounting functions
- Interface with board committees on finance and accounting matters
- Continuously develop process improvements within the finance & accounting systems (Unanet, Concur, etc.)
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field, Master's degree or CPA preferred
- 12+ years of experience in financial operations, accounting, or financial management, preferably in a non-profit or government contracting environment
- Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles, internal controls, and regulatory compliance
- Demonstrated experience with financial systems, expense management platforms, and audit processes
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a style that promotes collaboration, discussion and innovation
- Must have an entrepreneurial mindset with a strong desire to have an impact on society
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic, entrepreneurial environment; ability to exercise flexibility and good judgment in complex situations
- Appetite for curiosity and desire to learn
$170,000 - $210,000 a year
Salary is commensurate on experience. This position is bonus eligible.
