Position Summary
The School Nurse provides essential healthcare services to students, promoting wellness and ensuring a safe and healthy environment conducive to learning. They assess and address the health needs of students, administer medications, provide first aid, and collaborate with parents, teachers, and healthcare professionals to support students' physical and emotional well-being. The school nurse also plays a vital role in health education, promoting healthy lifestyle choices and disease prevention among students and staff. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

    • Meet those standards of performance for nursing assignment developed by New Orleans Public Schools and all applicable local, state, and federal guidelines.  
    • Know and adapt the standards of nursing practice to a school setting.  
    • Conduct and coordinate health-screening programs at periodic intervals, or on referral, as specified by local, state, or federal mandates.  
    • Refer identified health problems to the appropriate resource for correction and/or amelioration.  
    • Initiate follow-up of identified health problems as required.  
    • Interpret health status and/or problems to student, parent, and school personnel and make recommendations when appropriate.  
    • Plan, coordinate, and implement a program of health instruction.  
    • Serve as a resource to school personnel regarding various aspects of health education.  
    • Maintain up-to-date cumulative health records on all students, and complete required administrative records.  
    • Assist in the control of communicable disease in the schools.  
    • Assess and assist in maintaining a safe and healthful school environment.  
    • Serve as a member of the student assistance teams.  
    • Participate in staff conferences and all scheduled in-service education sessions.  
    • Maintain and improve professional competence.  
    • Perform related duties as assigned by supervisor.  
    • Maintain compliance with all company policies and procedures.  
    • Performs other duties as required.

Educational Background

    • Bachelor degree preferred.  
    • Louisiana Ancillary Certification required.  

Other Knowledge, Skills or Abilities Required Skills

    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to communicate effectively with internal and external customers.  
    • Excellent computer proficiency (MS Office – Word, Excel and Outlook). 
    • Must be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines, while maintaining a positive attitude and providing exemplary customer service. 
    • Ability to work independently and to carry out assignments to completion within parameters of instructions given, prescribed routines, and standard accepted practices.   
$45,400 - $723,110 a year
Salaries are determined by educational background and/or relevant years of experience.

- Required to use motor coordination with finger dexterity (such as keyboarding, machine operation, etc.) part of the workday;

- Required to be exposed to physical environment which involves dirt, odors, noise, weather extremes or similar elements rarely; 
- Normal setting for this job is an office/school setting.     

Performance Evaluation
The employee will be evaluated based on the above position using either two methods: via COMPASS or a NOLA-PS evaluating instrument. If the employee holds an Educational Leadership certification, he/she will be evaluated via COMPASS to ensure renewal of certification.
