About Us
Our mission is to develop transformational genetic medicines utilizing novel delivery technologies, with an emphasis on diseases with significant unmet medical need. Our team is advancing multiple innovative approaches to deliver a variety of therapeutic payloads, focusing initially on gene editing in therapeutically relevant cells and tissues. Our world class scientific founders include Professor David Liu (HHMI, Broad and Harvard) and Professor Keith Joung (Arena BioWorks, formerly MGH), and we are funded with a significant capital investment by leading life science venture capital firms including Newpath Partners, Atlas Venture, F-Prime Capital, and 5AM Ventures. We believe that our technology has the potential to positively impact patients suffering from severe genetic diseases, and we are committed to building an excellent, science-driven and diverse team that is passionate about making a difference. Nvelop Therapeutics is based in Cambridge, MA.

Position Overview
As the head of data sciences, you will set the data science strategy for Nvelop, build the computational infrastructure to enable the research function, lead a wet-lab sequencing team, and implement advanced data analytics. The infrastructure build will include data and metadata capture systems, integration of large datasets, development of computational tools, and interfaces for research scientists to query the company’s data.

You will lead a wet-lab team with both service provider and exploratory functions and will provide both technical guidance and prioritization of resources.

The data analytics will include applying best-in-class data analysis and machine learning solutions to understand and interpret multi-platform profiling data to answer research questions and drive target and biomarker discovery.

The successful candidate will leverage their expertise, work both independently and as part of a collaborative team to execute against our corporate goals. You will collaborate closely with experimental scientists, both in your team and cross-functionally, to ensure that data is effectively utilized for high level impact. You will work directly with scientists to develop and train on consistent data management procedures and data curation. You will drive external collaborations where necessary to augment internal capabilities.

Responsibilities

    • Design and implement multi-omics data analysis pipelines and storage solutions for various forms of sequencing data incorporating regular feedback from end users
    • Collaborate closely with experimental scientists to ensure high-impact data generation
    • Structure and store data to enable data mining and analytics
    • Analyze and interpret multi-omic data to drive results
    • Implement and apply machine learning methods to predict optimal therapeutics designs
    • Demonstrate strong leadership, personal accountability and interpersonal skills, and capability for mentoring junior colleagues (direct reports and others); build strong teams and actively foster colleague engagement
    • Create compelling data visualizations and result presentations for internal and external dissemination, including senior leadership

Qualifications

    • Ph.D. in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, or related quantitative discipline with at least 10 years of relevant experience, ideally within the biotech or pharmaceutical industries focused on gene therapy research.
    • Demonstrated track record of leading a data science function with an emphasis on reproducible research, strong working relationships with the NGS wet lab, and the implementation of state-of-the-art data analytics.
    • Proficient with experimental design, data processing, statistical analysis, and bioinformatics analysis/reporting of next-generation sequencing data.
    • Significant experience with the development and characterization of gene therapy platforms, preferably in the gene editing space.
    • Expertise in the central concepts of data engineering including data structures, database modeling, and workflow management.
    • Managerial experience in an industrial setting.
    • Fluency in one or more programming languages with bioinformatics applications (R, Python).
    • Familiarity with computational methods for understanding molecular results of gene editing outcomes including on-target, off-target, and structural variants.
    • Familiarity with short and long read next-generation sequencing platforms (Illumina, PacBio, Nanopore).
    • Proficiency in handling large scale sequencing data in a cloud environment (AWS preferred).
    • Proficiency in statistics and machine learning.
    • Track record of success working in a fast-paced, cross-functional, and rapidly growing organization.
    • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, ability to work with colleagues from diverse scientific backgrounds and cultures.
    • A collaborative and strategic mindset.
