Observable is seeking a full-time Senior Marketing Designer. We believe in the power of visual expressiveness — both when it is applied to data and to our brand. We’re visualization enthusiasts, business intelligence gurus, and open source developers. We’re map geeks and color palette fiends. Our brand needs a visual identity grounded in this passion and expressed in a design language that embodies it. We want you to join us helping professional developers and their customers bring order to and find meaning in data.

Successful candidates will have experience creating visual assets for technical, developer-centric audiences. The right candidate should be prepared to build upon their already strong portfolio with some of the best work of their career. 

As the steward of the consistent expression of our brand, you will:

    • Create layouts, graphics, original illustrations, and motion assets for all marketing activities: ad campaigns, social media, blogs, videos, email templates, swag, and more.
    • Create and maintain designs for our marketing site and landing pages, including a library of reusable, composable elements for the site.
    • Partner with an external agency to evolve a new visual brand language and identity for Observable. This will cover color, typography, shape, textures, movement and more — everything except the logo is on the table.
    • Collaborate with product designers to integrate our brand language into UX components and our products.
    • Create slide decks and templates for sales enablement, training materials, events, and more.

What you'll bring:

    • 8+ years of experience as a designer creating digital marketing assets
    • A portfolio that shows data visualizations and at least one website for a B2B company delivering to technical users, ideally including developers
    • Familiarity with data visualization or BI tools
    • Ability to balance moving quickly with delivering quality work

We build on open source, including React, Node.js, and PostgreSQL, as well as a number of our own open source libraries. We care deeply about user-centered design, from programming language and syntax design, to API construction, to the graphical user interface, to the final pass of visual polish.
