The Role

We’re looking for exceptional, enthusiastic and curious candidates looking to start their tech careers to join us as an Junior Software Engineer on our Utilities Internship programme, aimed at giving you a fully supported introduction to Kraken and getting you ready to continuously deliver features that provide value to our customers. Our ideal engineers would be individuals who love to engage with interesting customer problems and solve them through the art of software, with an interest in backend development and the passion to build and shape the future within a collaborative, community-based environment.

We operate a highly agile development approach, giving wide scope to be involved with hands-on system-design, test driven development, deployment and operations, all working with our great clients to solve their biggest challenges.

We are aiming for this person to start ASAP and will work full-time for 8-10 weeks in London.

What you'll do:

    • Design, build and maintain reusable & reliable code
    • Contribute to development across the entire stack from the frontend down to the infrastructure that the platform runs on
    • Contribute to the software engineering culture here at Kraken
    • Collaborate regularly with colleagues with many different professional specialities to create innovative solutions that delight our customers and colleagues
    • Work as part of a high performing team of engineers, product manager and designers and regularly seeking feedback and growing your skills as technical professionals.

What you'll need:

    • An understanding (and experience using as part of your degree or bootcamp) of either Typescript/Javascript or Python (you will complete a technical exercise in one of these as part of the interview process)
    • A drive to get things done in a collaborative, agile development environment
    • An ability to be product-driven and speak to our water specialists to bring their needs into the product
    • An ability to perform well in a fast-paced environment
    • Excellent analytical and multitasking skills
    • Ideally a penultimate-year student, but we are always willing to make exceptions
If this sounds like you then we'd love to hear from you.

Are you ready for a career with us? We want to ensure you have all the tools and environment you need to unleash your potential. Need any specific accommodations? Whether you require specific accommodations or have a unique preference, let us know, and we'll do what we can to customise your interview process for comfort and maximum magic!

Studies have shown that some groups of people, like women, are less likely to apply to a role unless they meet 100% of the job requirements. Whoever you are, if you like one of our jobs, we encourage you to apply as you might just be the candidate we hire. Across Octopus, we're looking for genuinely decent people who are honest and empathetic. Our people are our strongest asset and the unique skills and perspectives people bring to the team are the driving force of our success. As an equal opportunity employer, we do not discriminate on the basis of any protected attribute. Our commitment is to provide equal opportunities, an inclusive work environment, and fairness for everyone.
