Octopus Energy is a global energy leader revolutionizing the way people use energy. We're not just an energy supplier; we're a tech company building a cleaner, smarter energy future.
The Global Energy Markets team at Octopus Energy makes sure we always have the electricity and gas we need to power our customers’ homes and businesses, while also supporting the grid to accelerate the transition to Net Zero.
To deliver on this mission, our global team is made up of five specialist areas:
Forecasting - predicting energy demand and generation
Trading - hedging and shaping our trading positions
Risk - tracking and reporting ongoing risk to Octopus
PPA - increasing the share of energy we buy directly from generators
Engineering - building and running the global technical platform that makes it all work
Our Engineering sub-team is the glue that keeps everything running. We maintain the global tech platform that powers these processes, and we’re always looking for ways to innovate and improve. Building better tools, streamlining workflows, and creating robust systems that keep trading operations running like clockwork.
We’re looking for an experienced Data Platform Engineer to join us. You’ll be comfortable jumping into different tasks to support each team, using a variety of coding languages across our platform setup. You’ll enjoy working with colleagues across the company, explaining technical processes clearly, and building scalable solutions that support our data growth.
We’d be especially excited to meet someone who has worked with trading systems, data flows, and teams across EU electricity and gas markets, experience that will help us grow internationally.
This is a chance to take on a role that blends complex data engineering, platform infrastructure, and business-critical problem-solving, all while helping transform the energy industry for the better.
What you will be doing...
- Maintaining and developing our data platform infrastructure, helping team members to debug and resolve live issues while growing a self-service suite of monitoring tools;
- Driving long-term robustness and scalability of trading processes supporting global growth;
- Setting up and maintaining processes for capturing, preparing and loading valuable new data into the data lake;
- Helping trading, forecasting, risk and PPA teams to optimise key operational pipelines while taking responsibility for process maintenance;
- Developing automations and alerts to quickly debug where these pipelines are failing or showing unprecedented trends;
- Working with international teams across the Octopus Energy Group to ensure everyone shares the best possible practises and code is standardised where possible.
What you'll have...
- Strong experience in platform infrastructure development with Kubernetes, AWS, Terraform/OpenTofu IAC, Postgres, CDC systems and Docker;
- Passion for enabling self-service platform monitoring using Datadog, Grafana and Prometheus;
- Expertise with SQL and Python as our core data languages;
- Solid experience with Django and WSGI would be highly desirable;
- Experience with our other data products would be beneficial: Airflow, Spark, dbt, Jupyter;
- Skilled at shaping needs into a solid set of requirements and designing scalable solutions to meet them;
- Team player excited at the idea of ownership across lots of different projects and tools;
- Passion for driving towards Net Zero;
- Drives knowledge sharing and documentation for a more effective platform;
- Open to travelling to Octopus offices across Europe and the US.
