Overview
Octopus Energy is now one of the largest suppliers of gas and electricity to UK householders, with 6.5 million customers and a multi-billion pound turnover. Our Margin Assurance team delivers value to the business through product development, reporting & bespoke analysis relating to the margin gap created by inflated costs and missed revenue opportunities.
The Margin Assurance Product aims to build on existing pipelines that produce a highly granular view of consumption, revenue and costs for every customer and period within the time range specified, accounting for the majority portion of Octopus’ financials and the basis for financial reporting to many stakeholders, including Octopus board, CFO and several teams within Octopus.
We are seeking to identify where there is an imbalance between cost to serve and revenue generated, breaking down historical financial reporting by root causes, summarising areas of opportunity in the operational business to resolve and rebalance, generating gross margin for the retail business.

Our perfect person would meet a minimum standard in all of these areas… but we place an equally high value on an ability to pick up new skills and knowledge … and nobody (least of all us) is perfect!
Desirable Skills
- dbt modelling and testing (SQL and Python)
- Python analysis on Jupyter Hub
- Pyspark coding in Databricks notebooksSpark job optimisation on Databricks
- Inksacio dashboards
- Process mapping in MIRO
- Documentation in Notion and/or Secoda
- Not essential but a bonus would be having experience preparing / analysing energy billing and settlement data
What kind of responsibilities does this job include
- Leading data engineering, including design and delivery.
- Building a new pipelines to connect Kraken, Industry, Settlement and Financial data
- Automating and expanding a suite of reconciliations to assure accuracy of output
- Expanding use cases, making it easily accessible for dependent Industry Ops teams to implement fixes from its granular detail
- Setting up dashboards to automate reporting and track data integrity.
- Designing and implementing easy-to-use processes that allow for highly flexible adjustments to the Margin Assurance output for spontaneous operational and accounting requirements
- Ensuring the Margin Assurance and Industry Ops teams gets the output they need on a weekly/monthly basis
- Finding, troubleshooting and solving problems leading to shifting trends or irregularities in the margin assurance numbers caused by changes in Kraken, industry or coding logic, including new changes in the market
- Working with a wide variety of teams across Kraken and the OE retail businesses to align and improve logic where possible, particularly with regards to customer edge cases
- Supporting related Gross Margin team projects
