Addressing Black representation in the energy industry
At Octopus Energy, our mission is to drive the global renewable revolution and make green energy affordable for all. In order to succeed, we need to build a team that represents everyone in our society. Unfortunately, Black professionals make up < 2% of the energy workforce which is a significant under representation compared to the ethnic composition of the UK. To help address this, we have created an internship programme that is only open to candidates who identify with any Black, Black British, African or Caribbean background. We are committed to promoting equality, and this internship is an important step in our effort to foster greater diversity and inclusiveness in our business and industry.

This is our fourth year running the internship programme. You can hear from our past interns and learn about our previous internships from our 2022 blog, and our 2021 blog.

Who we are
We are an international energy supply company who put customers at the heart of everything we do. We empower our people to give outrageously good customer service, and fight to make energy fairer, more affordable, and more accessible for all. We are striving to halt the climate emergency by unlocking a smart, 100% green grid. We are using technology to transform the energy system; making electricity green and affordable, creating one-of-a-kind energy innovations.

Our work is powered by freedom, autonomy and responsibility. We won best company to work for in 2022 and were voted as one of the 50 best places to work in 2022 on Glassdoor. Our Group CEO, Greg, has recorded a podcast about our culture and how we empower our people - give it a listen to find out more about Octopus Energy!

Octopus Energy Generation (OEGEN) is part of Octopus Energy and is one of Europe’s largest investors in renewables. We operate a portfolio of £5.8 billion worth of green energy generating assets across 10 countries. These have a combined capacity of 3.3GW, enough energy to power 2.2 million homes every year!

The roles & what you'll do

Asset Management [Wind]
In this role you will work closely with the asset management team to understand the operational aspects of wind farm management. You will monitor wind assets, analysing wind turbine data to identify performance issues and suggest improvements. You will also prepare performance reports and presentations for stakeholders, as well as conducting research on the latest trends and technologies in the wind energy sector. You will be self-motivated, able to work independently, with a strong interest in renewable energy (especially wind energy). Strong communication and teamwork skills will help you in this role. Proficiency in data analysis and the Microsoft Office suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word) is required for this role.

ESG and Sustainability
You will assist in reviewing suppliers and investments against our ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) policies and undertake projects in the broader sustainability realm, such as Climate Scenario Risk Modelling and Carbon Measurement. You will conduct research, collect data, calculate metrics, and help prepare ESG/sustainability case studies and reports. We are looking for someone with an eye for detail and who is confident in managing large amounts of data. A general understanding of ESG/sustainability issues and competency in Excel is required for this role.

GRC (Governance, Risk and Compliance)
The GRC team manages regulatory, privacy, operational and criminal risks across OEGEN, delivering regulatory advice and risk management to the whole team. You will be involved in research, analysis, and project coordination daily. You will also support change management in OEGEN, gathering information and making recommendations to assist strategic planning. You will coordinate activities with multiple stakeholders, and support your team with communications, compliance training and arranging meetings. An interest in financial regulation and risk, as well as good research and summarisation skills will help you in this role. Good communication and prioritisation skills are required for this role.

Growth and Strategy
The Growth and Strategy team is responsible for developing new strategies for our investors as well as bringing these investors into our products. You will have the opportunity to explore all aspects of our business as we implement new strategies, from investments through to ESG and asset management. You will assist with creating summaries of our strategies for prospective investors to review, modelling potential new strategies we are bringing to market and engaging with potential investors in introductions and negotiations. A general understanding of finance alongside Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint would be helpful in this role.

Portfolio Management
You will focus on the valuations and ongoing management of the assets within OEGEN’s funds, liaising with other teams, including Asset Management, Investment, and Finance teams. Key tasks will include conducting market research and updating financial models (discounted cash flows) for changes in key assumptions that are required for valuations, including macroeconomic forecasts and asset performance. Key skill sets we look for include good knowledge of finance and competency in Microsoft Excel, with a willingness to further develop these skills. Active communication skills, accountability, and willingness to support the continuous improvement and optimisation of processes is required for this role.

What you'll have
Your technical skills will depend on the type of role you’d like to apply for. But in general, we’re looking for someone with a passion for sustainability and renewable energy, a love for problem-solving, an eye for detail and an interest in trying new things. You should be able to show ability and interest, but you do not necessarily need any formal education in science, finance, or engineering.

Above all, we’re looking for someone who thrives in a dynamic environment and who isn’t afraid to think differently and challenge the status quo. If this sounds like you and you have a genuine passion for what we are doing, then we'd love to hear from you!
