About the team

This role sits in the Frontend Foundations team, which is composed of product designers and engineers. The team helps to improve the productivity and efficacy of other R&D teams working in the frontend, while also helping to make our UX a world-class experience.

Salary expectation:
AUD $175,000 - $185,000 + Super + stock options
NZD $190,000 - $200,000

Experience required for this role

    • You are an experienced individual contributor and leader in your current job, ideally having provided technical leadership for frontend teams of software engineers and designers.
    • You have a firm grasp of the software trade using TypeScript and React, with at least 5 years of experience in frontend technologies and software engineering.
    • You have experience maintaining a large and complex codebase over time. Through personal experience, you have learned the importance of architecting a simple and maintainable codebase to keep velocity high and sustainable.
    • You've built and maintained component libraries. You care about writing simple and accessible frontend components with tests that inspire confidence and are easy to maintain.
    • You enjoy collaborating with other engineers and designers to solve problems, challenging each other to discover the best solution for a problem using a balance of passion, pragmatism, and empathy.
    • You are a results-oriented person, someone who is focused on iteratively delivering valuable things to your customers; who proactively changes direction based on clear and transparent business information, and someone who helps others do the same.

You will like this role if...

    • You enjoy a balance of coding and leadership.
    • You enjoy collaborating with designers to achieve the best outcome for both users and development teams.
    • You like a balance of freedom and responsibility, being treated as an adult.
    • You enthusiastically accept radically candid feedback; feedback that is thoughtful, timely, and directly actionable, and offer the same benefit to others.
    • You enjoy doing things the right way from the very beginning, knowing you are working on a valuable asset.
    • You want to do the best work of your life with other like-minded people.

A typical day might include…

    • Solving complex problems and taming complexity, impacting all engineering teams at Octopus by improving the platform upon which our world class frontends are built.
    • Advocating for process improvements and keeping the team focused on the most valuable things, driving the team towards solution delivery. Contributing to both design and engineering working together harmoniously.
    • Gathering feedback from designers and engineers so you can plan changes to the design system that accommodates everyone.
    • Changing source code hosted in GitHub, collaborating on a pull-request, getting feedback from other Octopus Deploy engineers on how the changes affect them and iterating on this to reach the desired outcome.
    • Pairing with another engineer to solve a complex technical problem or decide how to best architect the frontend for new features.
    • Working with designers to plan the next evolution of our navigation experience in our frontend, based on feedback received from customers.

Equal Opportunity

    • We’ve built an inclusive workplace culture and understand the true importance of culture-add, versus culture-fit.
    • From day 1, you'll have a buddy helping you get your bearings. You can book in coffee chats with anyone in the company. We encourage everyone to have a voice in all aspects of the product and the business. So much so that we have an open chat policy (all channels are public by default) and everyone is welcome!
    • Also when it comes to inclusivity, we mean it, check out our handbook!
    • If you’d like to work at Octopus, reach out and say hello!
