TL;DR: On Deck is looking for EIRs to invest in and support founders in ODX with their expertise, while exploring their own company ideas.

About On Deck
On Deck is where top talent comes to accelerate their ideas and careers, surrounded by a world-class community.

Our vision is to build Silicon Valley for the Internet — an ambitious, new form of community-centric “venture company” that will unlock generations of talent, to help solve the world’s biggest problems.

We build communities that help people start and scale companies, help people join companies, and help people at companies succeed at their jobs.

So far, we've built an ecosystem of ~10,000 founders, operators, investors and domain experts. On Deck fellows have collectively founded 1,000+ startups and raised $1B+ from top-tier investors worldwide (e.g. a16z, Sequoia).

This is all enabled by our talented team of 250+ from all across the world. Read more about how we row together to help you decide whether On Deck is a place you’d like to spend your time.

About the Role
If you have 10+ years of experience as a senior leader or operator in technology or you are a repeat founder who has launched at least one venture-backed startup and want to break into VC, truly master your operating craft, or start a company, On Deck’s Entrepreneur in Residence program is your front-row seat at a $100 million accelerator.

During the assignment, which can last up to 12 months, you’ll join the On Deck team as a full-time, salaried employee and leverage your experience to help On Deck founders build the next unicorns by:

Slotting in as a Partner for On Deck’s portfolio companies. You’ll be a full-time advisor and leverage your operational expertise to help 10+ On Deck portfolio companies (per quarter) build, scale, and overcome challenges. You’ll learn years’ worth of lessons in months and master your operating craft by helping startups across different industries and various stages hit tangible goals in 90-day sprints.

Working alongside the ODX investment team. You’ll screen applications, interview founders, and make investment decisions. If you’re new to VC, we’ll give you a crash course and teach you everything you need to excel – from how to evaluate startup ideas to developing your investing thesis. We will also help you develop a stellar network.

Supporting special projects for founders. Our aim is to make On Deck the most valuable startup ecosystem in the world. You will provide one-off support on special projects to achieve this goal.

On the side of supporting founders, you’ll leverage On Deck resources to explore markets, validate ideas, find a co-founder and get conviction on what’s next.

As an EIR you will receive a guaranteed investment from ODX if and when you start a company following the EIR engagement. This is a truly unique opportunity to come support and invest in founders today and receive investment from On Deck when you start a company. All EIRs will be expected to sign the ODX Memorandum of Understanding indicating that if they start a company they agree to accept the ODX investment, which is $125k for 7%. More details around our investment terms can be found here.

This role reports to Eric Friedman, Partner at ODX.

What you'll be doing:

    • Support a small group of ODF or ODX companies with 1:1 coaching.
    • Engage the broader On Deck founder network as an advisor in your area of operating expertise.
    • Screen applications, interview founders, and decide on investments.
    • Help us scout and close promising companies.
    • Use On Deck’s network and resources to explore your next venture.
    • If desired — tag in on special projects throughout On Deck.

What we're looking for:

    • You have 10+ years of experience as a senior leader or operator in technology, ideally in a VP or higher role, or you are a repeat founder who has launched at least one venture-backed startup.
    • You've played a key role in helping successful startups achieve scale in one of the following areas: go-to-market, operations, product, or engineering (or have been a founder yourself).
    • You are excited about the prospect of working closely with founders and can leverage your operating experience to add value to ODX founders via your personal experience and personal network.
    • You are currently in-between things, unsure whether a new role or starting a company is the right path for you.

Why you might be excited about On Deck:

    • We’re tackling a big problem with even bigger potential. We plan to build the modern educational institution for the next 100 years.
    • Read our Wall of Love and our Alumni Case Studies to get a sense of why people love being part of this community.
    • Last year we raised our Series A from Keith Rabois at Founders Fund and nearly 200 of the best operators and investors (including many of our community members).
    • We also recently announced our $100M community-backed fund to support our accelerator ODX.
    • You’ll be able to work remotely and (mostly) set your own schedule. On Deck was a remote-first team even before COVID, so we know what makes for a great remote environment.

Why you might *not* be excited about us:

    • We are still a fairly young company so if you like more established companies, this role isn’t for you.
    • We're an early stage startup. Projects and priorities may shift.
    • Everyone on the team is extremely mission-driven, and works incredibly hard to push towards our lofty ambitions.
    • On Deck is an unabashedly pro-startup, pro-tech organization. If that’s not your thing, this isn’t the place for you.

    • If you were to join On Deck, we'd want you to love it. We also know that it can be hard to tell from the outside looking in whether that would be the case for you. So, we challenged ourselves to develop our Non-Values, an honest set of reasons someone wouldn't want to join our company. We hope it helps you make an informed decision about whether On Deck is a place you'd love to work.
