Machine Learning Research Internship

San Francisco
Member of Technical Staff
Intern

Our internship program offers the opportunity to work with the OpenAI team, help advance OpenAI's goals of building a beneficial AI, and grow as an AI researcher in the process. Topical areas include—but are not limited to—deep reinforcement learning, deep unsupervised learning, meta-learning, imitation learning, and adversarial examples. Application domains include AI safety, personal robotics, natural language processing, and agents that can navigate the entire digital world. Internships are available year-round, with 3-month duration, and flexible timing.

Every intern is paired with one or more OpenAI research scientist mentors. Interns and mentors will work together to complete a project or publication by the end of the internship. Our interns will also learn from participation in our reading group and through osmosis in our tight-knit office environment.

For experienced candidates, extensive experience with deep learning is recommended but not an absolute requirement. In these cases, we look for some combination of:

- Depth and breadth of knowledge in the field of deep learning or closely-related fields
- Track record of high-impact publications in deep learning or closely-related fields
- Ability to implement and scale up both state of the art baselines and unproven algorithms

For candidates new to the field, we're looking for people with high potential and drive, who could become highly productive in the field on a six-month time horizon. Ways for candidates to demonstrate this include but are not limited to:

- Accomplishing something impressive in an unrelated but technical field (e.g. building a creative system, winning awards at the IOI or IMO, high-impact publications in another field)
- Making significant progress on our OpenAI Requests for Research
- Strong contributions to our open-source projects

In all cases, we look for people who are creative, self-motivated and excited about the transformative potential of AI. OpenAI encourages candidates with diverse backgrounds to apply.

About OpenAI

OpenAI’s mission is to build safe AI, and ensure AI's benefits are as widely and evenly distributed as possible. We are building a team of researchers and engineers to make the defining breakthroughs in machine learning.

We care about what people will accomplish here much more than what they've already done: for any of our hiring criteria, demonstration of exceptional motivation and potential can overcome a lack of experience. We value personal development; we hire curious, highly-motivated individuals who look to grow in areas where they have not yet achieved mastery.

Our impact is greater than just publishing research papers. We build working systems. We try to empower and strengthen the AI research community, and collaborate freely. We publish our techniques, tools, and methods, and try to find creative approaches for how to improve the progress and impact of ML research.

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.
