Research Scientist, Learned Optimizer Team

San Francisco
Member of Technical Staff
Full-time
At OpenAI, we’re excited to pursue approaches to AI that improve with scale. Towards this end, we are spinning up a Learned Optimizer Team. This team will work on techniques that automate and optimize various parts of the process of training deep neural nets. This direction of research will enable faster and more efficient progress towards advanced AI capabilities and play a key role in the trajectory of OpenAI as an organization.

As this is a nascent effort, we are looking for someone who has deep experience in relevant fields and will be able to operate autonomously and effectively amid high ambiguity, exercising technical leadership as well as good engineering practices to pursue transformative breakthroughs for the field of deep learning. You would be a founding member of this team and play a critical role in shaping its success.

We would especially be excited to talk to people with experience in one or more of the following fields (one is enough):

    • Learning data augmentations, activation functions, optimizers, device placement
    • Neural architecture search
    • Reinforcement Learning
    • Population-based training
    • Evolutionary strategies
    • Bayesian optimization with neural networks
    • Optimization theory

We expect you to have:

    • Self-direction and ability to develop, own and pursue a research agenda
    • Proficient programming skills
    • Experience building state of the art or production-scale ML systems, especially optimized for compute usage
