The selected individual will lead SSE’s power market research and analysis of the Japanese power market, with a focus on renewable energy economics.
You will engage with industry bodies and advisors to gain a deep understanding of the Japanese power market and its future evolution, from both a market fundamentals and policy/regulatory perspective. You will manage the development of the SSE view of long-term wholesale power prices and asset revenues for the Japanese electricity market. These prices and market outlooks will be used to guide commercial evaluation of renewable generation assets, potential investments and divestments, and strategy assessment.
As a subject matter expert on the Japanese power market, you will report to the Head of International Markets within the Energy Economics department of SSE. You will be a key member of a broader international team of analysts and market experts that form an in-house advisory team that provides valuable market insights to support SSE’s international growth. You will be based in Tokyo, working alongside the SSE Pacifico team (SSE Pacifico was founded in October 2021 to deliver offshore wind projects in Japan and is a joint ownership company (80% SSE, 20% Pacifico Energy).
 
Key responsibilities include:

-  Deliver market-related costs and revenue assumptions for Japanese projects: Managing the process for creating and updating market insight and forecasting reports focusing on Japan. These reports include an overview of market fundamentals of supply and demand, market design, and policy support mechanisms. Crucially this includes working with advisors and internal stakeholders to develop a set of power price scenarios and any other relevant market input required for project valuations and to inform strategic decisions.
-  Manage the support EE gives on project development, M&A, and subsidy auctions in Japan: This will involve the provision of reports, advice, and presentations (up to MD and Group Exec level).
-  External engagement: Leading external industry relationships and proactively engaging with relevant industry and regulatory bodies to understand and influence the evolution of the market.
-  Internal engagement: Building strong ties across internal teams within the SSE Group.
 
We’re looking for someone with:
-  A degree in a subject like math, economics, or engineering.
-  Worked on wholesale energy market analysis, with extensive experience in economic and commercial modeling
-  Deep understanding of power market economics and policy mechanisms.
Good at dealing with external stakeholders and can represent SSE in the industry.
