A World-Changing Company
At Palantir, we’re passionate about building software that solves problems. We partner with the most important institutions in the world to transform how they use data and technology. Our software has been used to stop terrorist attacks, discover new medicines, gain an edge in global financial markets, and more. If these types of projects excite you, we'd love for you to join us.
Palantir is building a team of mathematicians to solve some of the hardest problems the company and its customers face. The domains are diverse, but the problems all are ill-defined and require ingenuity in modeling. For example, is an observed pattern of behavior malicious? Where should we deploy resources against a seemingly random occurrence? What is the value of a purely discretionary bonus? Can we correct errors without any encodable rules? The team is committed to delivering outcomes, even if sometimes those outcomes are akin to proofs of impossibility, and sees firsthand how the answers change decisions at Palantir and its customers.
The team solves problems throughout the business — core operations, product development, and customer engagements. As a member of QED, your general mathematical training and expertise in creatively reducing ambiguous situations to tractable quantitative problems will factor far more heavily in your success than domain knowledge or specialized techniques. You will collaborate with the team as a unit to interview experts, review research literature for possible applicability or extension, implement working models using Palantir's platforms and open-source technologies, and present results to our stakeholders in the most cogent form. Because many of the projects ultimately relate to data, you will often need to prepare that data for analysis, explore it for possible approaches, and implement relevant statistical algorithms. At times, you will also tackle problems in the absence of meaningful data; we have, for example, produced analytical solutions (e.g. game-theoretic predictions) and proofs-of-concept in such cases. Members of QED do not necessarily have formal software development backgrounds, but you will code maintainable and efficient products containing your models. As a mathematician, you must also routinely prove the rigor and correctness of any solutions.
