Shepherd General - Waipori Station - Dunedin
Otago - Central Otago, New Zealand /
Livestock Operations – Livestock /
Permanent - On Farm
If you’re a motivated shepherd looking to join a strong team on an iconic livestock breeding station, this could be just the job for you.
As a Shepherd General on Waipori Station, you’ll work with a variety of stock types as well as livestock farming innovations (such as virtual fencing). This farm is focused on protecting the natural capital and environment in the region as well as driving on-farm performance. Waipori Station is 9,695ha effective mixed productive pasture and tussock country, operating as a sheep and cattle breeding operation with scope to finish most stock on-farm, wintering 55,000 stock units.
Waipori Station is located at Lake Mahinerangi on the edge of the Lammerlaw range just a 45-minutes’ drive from Mosgiel and 1 hour from Dunedin. The station runs 28,000 Romney and Halfbred breeding ewes and 1800 Angus breeding cows finishing all surplus cattle, there’s plenty of variety to keep you interested and ways in which you can learn and develop.
You’ll have a strong desire to work shoulder to shoulder in a high-performing team and will learn about breeding and finishing at scale as well as developing your stock, pasture, animal health, and health & safety recording skills.
Some of the work at Waipori Station involves mustering on horseback, so horsemanship would be an advantage, however, we can train you up if this is a skill you wish to develop. Ideally, you’ll have a well-controlled team of four to six working dogs.
We pride ourselves on living and breathing our safety culture and upholding our company expectations. As a Shepherd General with us, you’ll embrace our health and safety environment and requirements.
Our location offers easy access to a range of recreational activities including hunting and fishing on the station and sports clubs in the local area. Accommodation will either be shepherd’s quarters on-farm, which are self-contained units or a three-bedroom home, depending on your living requirements.
