The Opportunity
 
In this busy role, you’ll assist the farm manager in all aspects of running a Sheep Dairy farm. This will include the running of the milking parlour and milking process.
 
You will work across all areas of the farm including, lambing, feeding, machinery and general stock work. This role includes filling in for the farm manager and some supervision, and training of staff.
 
Key responsibilities of the role:
 
Leadership
Provide day-to-day leadership and management support & direction to other farm staff.
Act as farm manager when the farm manager is away/ off duty.
Act as a role model of organisational values, behaviours, corporate and farming best practices
Drive and ensure Pāmu standards and policies for e.g. health and safety, product quality, animal welfare, financial and asset management are met on farm.

Environmental Management
Support the farm manager with operating within environmental consent conditions and best practice environmental guidelines.

People Management
Establish, monitor and give regular feedback on performance against standards to all staff.
Provide supervision and training of junior staff during the milking and lambing seasons.

Health and Safety
Adhere to Pāmu’s Health and Safety policies and procedures at all times.
Assist with the induction of new staff so that they are aware of company policies and how to do each task safely.

Livestock Management
Ensure the smooth running of the milking parlour and milking process.
Support the Farm Manager with the smooth running of livestock transfers on and off farm.
Implement the agreed stock policy and animal health plan through appropriate stock and pasture management.
 
Planning and Reporting
Support the Farm Manager with the monitoring of livestock performance (physical and financial) and analysis of performance data to identify variances and develop insights.
Assist in the Farm Logbook records.

Milking
Ensure the effective operation of all aspects of the milking process, including plant hygiene and somatic cell count, to maintain grade free standards.
Accurately record all Logbook requirements and maintain appropriate dairy records in line with relevant regulations.
Ensure food safety is held in the highest regard through maintaining a clean working environment and a conscious team of milk harvesters.

Feed Production
Assist with any feed planning or the management of feed as required.
Assist with feeding of diets and pasture to ewes.
Assist in maintaining feed inventory and feed quality.

Effluent
Operate the effluent system on the farm to meet or exceed regional council compliance.
Maintain all appropriate effluent management records.

The Farm
St Kilda is Pāmu’s dairy sheep farm located near Reporoa/ Taupo. St Kilda milks about 800 sheep on about 220 hectares with an effective milking platform of 90 ha.
 
About You
You will have excellent leadership capability, a willingness to learn new systems and you’ll value the same things we do, people, animals, and the environment.
 
You will also: 
·         Have at least 5 years’ sheep farming experience (including at least 1 year sheep milking)
·         Have proven leadership/ management experience
·         Be self-motivated, with good use of initiative.
·         Be an effective communicator.
·         Have the ability to use farm management technology systems and record keeping equipment.
·         Have a first-class attitude to Health and Safety, Animal Welfare and Environmental Management
·         Hold a current and full NZ driver’s licence
 
If you have a relevant agriculture/agribusiness tertiary qualification, or equivalent combination of qualifications that would be great.

The salary range for this role is: $60,000 to $80,000 based on skills and experience.  
95 minimum hours of work per fortnight.
