We are searching for an exceptional fermentation scientist, who has a passion for helping farmers grow food using more sustainable and regenerative practices.  We receive soil samples from growers’ fields and process them to obtain a deep level of metagenomics and geochemical data and overlay them with other metadata.  We translate these data into information and ultimately into actionable knowledge to help growers manage their fields efficiently and maximize their return on investment.  

The fermentation scientist will be responsible for establishing the preliminary biomanufacturing process and scale up of new microbial solutions products in R&D for commercial pipeline.  Working closely with microbiologists and other members of the Discovery team, the holder of this position will design and execute small-to-medium scale bioprocess and microbiology workflows, and be responsible for on-boarding and testing new technologies.  In addition, scoping out toll fermentation service providers will be the responsibility of the scientist.

This is a full time, on-site position in Emeryville, CA


    • Develop new or improve existing fermentation, bioprocess technology workflow and assays including bacterial shake flask and culture medium development
    • Perform technical research to improve fermentation process parameters and strain production
    • Troubleshoot production issues and implement processes to minimize contamination and improve manufacturing reliability
    • Review literature to make appropriate technical recommendations for application adoption
    • Contribute towards a rigorous scientific and data driven cultureIdentify, evaluate and implement detailed experimental projects for fermentation pipeline development, and testing new technologies
    • Maintain detailed record of experimental findings
    • Organize, analyze and interpret data
    • Share progress regularly with leaders through reports and briefings
    • Ensure compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP)

Skills and Special Requirements

    • B.S with 7+ years/M.S with 5+ years/Ph.D. with 2+ years of relevant experience in Microbiology, Bacteriology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biotechnology or other relevant scientific discipline
    • Industry experience to identify and develop fermentation workflows using biomanufacturing technologies for bacteria
    • Strong technical skills and demonstrated accomplishment in developing baseline fermentation processes for bacteria, optimizing strain performance, viability and stability in addition to developing titer quantification assays and familiarity with pilot scale up
    • Minimum of three years of experience and safety knowledge working with Gram positive or negative bacteria, fermentation technology and scale-up, microbial physiology, and bioprocess design
    • Industry experience in high-throughput screening methods, scale-up processes, fed-batch fermentation, HPLC and/or flow cytometry is a plus
    • Strong collaborative mindset with the ability to work with and form partnership in cross-functional teams
    • Highly self-motivated, independent and passionate about discovering biological solutions for farmers
