As the newest member of the Screening team you will help develop biochemical assays to improve our ultra-high throughput screening platforms and reliably identify our next generation production strains. 

The Screening team is a fast-paced and multidiscipline team, and we need a motivated and proactive research associate to help develop state-of-the-art screening techniques and to screen our strains for desired phenotypes. If you enjoy solving diverse biochemical problems with interesting target proteins in a collaborative team with the goal of identifying microbial protein production strains, this is the role for you! A successful candidate will have prior industry experience working in teams to develop new techniques and build robust methods to measure protein abundance, detect enzymatic activity, characterize microbial strains and more. The ideal candidate is flexible, can think outside the box and is passionate about developing, applying and optimizing state-of-the art strain screening techniques. Prior experience in biochemical assay development is required. Experience working with filamentous fungi and a basic understanding of flow cytometry is desirable.


    • Develop and apply assays to quantify microbial protein secretion in a ultra-high throughput manner.
    • Develop and apply assays to characterize enzymatic activities in a ultra-high throughput manner.
    • Optimize strain screenings in microfluidic systems.
    • Screen strains in deep well plate format, analyze results, and improve plate screening model.
    • Optimize growth conditions of microorganisms in multi-well plates to match performance in bioreactors
    • Write experimental protocols for new methods.
    • Data analysis, statistical analysis, and data reporting.
    • Work in a team, being proactive in your work, seeking opportunities to build your understanding, and contributing to a collegial environment.
    • Maintain timely and thorough documentation of work.
    • Maintain a high degree of accuracy and meticulous attention to detail.


    • B.S. in microbiology, biochemistry, or related field with 2+ years of detection chemistry related experience.
    • Candidate must possess a high level of technical aptitude, excellent communication, organization, and collaborative skills, and demonstrated ability to innovate, troubleshoot, and thrive in a dynamic cross-functional team environment.
    • Experience with biochemical assay development.
    • Experience with bioanalytical assays including PAGE, Western Blot, ELISA and Plate Reader Assays.
    • Experience with handling and cultivation of microbial organisms ideally including filamentous fungi.
    • Ability to adapt to a rapidly changing environment.
    • Maintain a high degree of accuracy and meticulous attention to detail.
    • Capable of high performance in independent work and in team setting.
    • Strong desire to work in multi-disciplinary teams, learn new skills and proactively solve problems.


    • Experience with flow cytometry is desirable
    • Experience with fluorescence microscopy is desirable.
    • Experience with JMP or other statistical software is desirable.
    • Experience with Python, R, or other programming language is desirable.


    • Position is located in a mix of typical laboratory, workshop and kitchen environments, and requires a tolerance for high worker traffic, close quarters, noise, odors, dust, and varying room temperatures and lighting.
