As part of our continuous growth, we are looking for a Principal Software Test Engineer to join our PI Design Services team. 

The Role 

As a Principal Software Test Engineer, you are responsible for designing and overseeing test and verification programs from scratch.  As part of a multidisciplinary project team, you will focus on the embedded software/firmware components of devices that may also include robotics, image processing, and communications interfaces like CAN, MQTT or BLE. You will advise on testability design and define the test strategy, including test automation. 

As a leader in the software test team, you will mentor and train others, guiding process and tool development. 

Producing functional, reliable, safe software is critical to both our reputation with clients and the regulatory standards we need to meet, so we highly value your work! 

The role is listed as full time, but we are open to offering part time positions as well. 

The Accountabilities

    • Lead a verification phase for a software project from start to end 
    • Define and champion verification and test plans, including test strategy and use of test automation 
    • Collaborate test efforts with other system components and overall system testing 
    • Report on progress, estimation and risks to ensure delivery of timely, quality test programs 
    • Task delegation, review and coaching for more junior software test engineers 
    • Influence software design in testing practices such as TDD/BDD and improving software testability.  

The Must Haves

    • Experience in developing or testing electronics, IoT, firmware or embedded software 
    • 8+ years industry experience in a test/QA role, including performing test automation 
    • Confident author of test/QA documentation (test plans, test scenarios, test reports, bug reports) 
    • Programming skills for basic scripting or data analysis (ideally Python, C# or C++) 
    • Comfort using the command line (e.g. Bash or Powershell) 
    • Experience with BDD scenarios 
    • Experience with software development basics (knowledge of Git, REST APIs, CI, Docker) 
    • Passion for learning new things in science, engineering and technology 
    • Precise, organised and contextual written and spoken communication 
    • Familiarity with Agile methodologies and ways of working 
    • Eligible to work permanently in Australia. 

The Nice to Haves

    • Software design and development in a QA controlled environment (particularly medical, automotive, defence industries) 
    • Working knowledge of regulatory requirements (IEC 62304, ISO 13485) 
    • Systems engineering education or experience.
