Planned Parenthood Los Angeles is seeking an experienced Public Affairs Specialist with excellent communication and customer service skills to work in our Los Angeles Headquarters.  Work with the Director of Public Affairs to develop and implement a Public Affairs strategy designed to achieve the Agency’s advocacy goals - including public education, direct lobbying of elected officials, and grassroots community organizing.  Monitor local, state, and federal legislation.  Ensure that PPLA staff and supporters have the tools, information, opportunity, and motivation to be effective advocates.  Help support daily activities of the Planned Parenthood Advocacy Project Los Angeles County (PPAP), a 501(c)(4) organization, including election analysis, public education, candidate research and endorsement, fundraising, Board management, and community and electoral organizing.  Help maintain PPLA and PPAP legal compliance.  Oversee PPAP online communication platforms, including website, Twitter, and Facebook accounts.  Manage VAN supporter database; train other staff, volunteers, and interns in proper use and support the Public Affairs Department in a wide variety of projects.

Our Ideal Candidate will have the following qualifications:

    • At least three to five (3-5) years working in advocacy, grassroots campaigns for a fast paced, multi-faceted organization
    • At least three to five (3-5) years in organizing, public relations, community engagement, communications, and/or other related disciplines
    • Track record of building relationships with a variety of stakeholders including internal customers, elected officials, and activists/volunteers
    • Working knowledge of the legislative process
    • Bachelor’s Degree preferred
    • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
    • Experience writing in a professional capacity preferred
    • Knowledge of social media best-practices preferred
    • Demonstrated ability working as part of a multidisciplinary team
    • Experience in brand management preferred
    • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred
    • Availability to work flexible hours, including weekends and evenings as needed

About the position:

    • With Director of Public Affairs, implement strategy for all advocacy efforts
    • Lead grassroots advocacy efforts, including but not limited to: activist recruitment, training, and engagement; visibility at rallies, town halls, and other events; phone banks and other grassroots lobbying actions; and grassroots outreach events and online advocacy campaigns
    • Develop, implement, and manage programs to engage, motivate, and educate activists and community supporters. Work with Volunteer and other departments as appropriate
    • Support direct lobbying efforts by organizing and conducting meetings in Los Angeles, Sacramento, and Washington, D.C. Submit letters on behalf of PPAP in support and opposition of bills
    • Build and manage relationships with elected officials and their staff to further advance Agency’s advocacy goals. Maintain current database of contacts
    • Regularly communicate with elected officials and their staff, including legislative and other updates, event invitations, newsletters, and reports
    • Research and monitor relevant legislative, political, and administrative issues at the local, state, and federal levels
    • Draft policy fact sheets, action alerts and policy updates
    • Support PPAP’s endorsement process: research, track, and interview candidates; coordinate process with Board of Directors; communicate endorsements as appropriate
    • Support PPAP’s electoral efforts, including managing independent expenditure campaigns (can include mail, phones, grassroots efforts, online communications, and more)
    • Lead annual Capitol Day planning efforts, including interfacing with Agency departments, making travel arrangements, scheduling lobby visits, and training attendees
    • Develop and maintain relationships with community organizations and leaders
    • Represent PPLA and PPAP at community events and other presentations
    • Liaison with PPAC, PPFA and other affiliates regarding legislation, lobbying activities, updates, electoral campaigns, and other timely issues
    • Manage Public Affairs internship program: supervise interns; create a positive learning environment by providing a meaningful experience; strategically engage community partners and elected officials
    • Understand grant agreement between PPLA and PPAP to ensure PPLA’s legal status as a 501 (c) (3) organization is protected at all times
    • Compile monthly grant reports of PPAP activity
    • Maintain working knowledge of law governing electoral work, including campaign finance
    • Assist in maintaining PPLA and PPAP’s legal compliance and record keeping
    • Assist in the fulfillment of all campaign finance and lobbying reporting requirements
    • Assist in PPAP fundraising efforts within established guidelines
    • Support management of PPAP Board of Directors; draft communications, attend meetings, provide information to Board Members as needed
    • With Director of Communications and Marketing, draft content for on- and off-line C4 Communications
    • Provide support to the Director of Public Affairs, Director of Communications & Marketing, Vice President of Public Affairs, and the Public Affairs Department as needed
