Planned Parenthood Los Angeles is seeking an experienced Vice President of Communications & Marketing with excellent customer service and management skills to work in our Downtown Los Angeles Headquarters.  The Vice President of Communications and Marketing is responsible for leading all communications activities both internally and externally to support and enhance the agency’s mission and priorities, providing oversight and development of agency communications efforts, collaborating on and implementing best practices to protect and advance agency branding. Develop marketing strategies designed to recruit and retain patients and clients, and provide agency-wide leadership and support to the Communications and Marketing Teams. Support efforts to manage pro-active media opportunities, crisis communication, cultivate relationships with key contacts, train and practice message delivery with key staff and spokespeople and brief Board, staff, and opinion leaders on relevant PPLA priorities and initiatives. This position will report to the CEO with a dotted line to the Chief External Affairs Officer.

Our Ideal Candidate will have the following qualifications:

    • Bachelor's Degree required, Master’s degree preferred. Degree in communications, journalism, or policy preferred
    • At least seven (7) to ten (10) years of increasingly responsible professional experience in communications/public relations required
    • Minimum three (3) years’ experience and demonstrated success in management of staff, volunteers, and in working with board members and contributors
    • Demonstrated experience with brand management, marketing, and/or advertising required
    • Marketing experience related to client recruitment and retention
    • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred
    • History of building and maintaining professional relationships
    • Experience working with the entertainment industry and influencers
    • Participation/leadership in media trainings (on-camera, radio, print, etc.)
    • Vendor selection and management, budget management
    • Familiar with IRS and political law for non-profit organizations
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite, familiarity with database management software
    • Ability to supervise others on special projects and in day-to-day work
    • Strong knowledge of reproductive health care issues and policies preferred
    • Proficiency in message and media training
    • Availability to work flexible hours, including weekends and evenings as required

About the position:

    • Create and manage implementation of strategic communications plans
    • Lead Agency communications goals and objectives in collaboration with Senior Staff
    • Direct President/CEO, members of the Board of Directors, Senior Staff and designated spokespeople in crisis communications
    • Direct internal communications for agency, including regular staff emails and crisis communications
    • Direct press strategy, including: staging of press conferences, rallies, and other earned media events; coordinating and conducting interviews; pitching stories and responding to media inquiries
    • Participate as an active member of the senior management team, and Agency-wide initiatives, working effectively and collaboratively with other departments/services, committees, conferences and meetings as required
    • Develop and maintain strategic communication and relationships with a wide range of public and private stakeholders, including donors, business community, public sector, community groups, news and social media outlets, and employees. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with traditional news and new media, and business organizations
    • Act as the key liaison and utilizing other appropriate spokesperson(s) to the media, government agencies, elected and appointed officials and other pro-choice organizations
    • Support communications needs from across the agency, including: fundraising materials, CEO reports, Patient Services updates, and Board communications
    • Strategize and lead implementation of best practices and trends in social media, on-line activism and data management
    • Oversee content for Agency publications – including newsletters, Annual Report, brochures, social media, etc. and development of enhanced Agency web presence incorporating state of the art technologies
    • Monitor opposition web sites and communications
    • Manage story concepts, pitch reporters, write articles, and columns for publication, press releases, media advisories, letters-to-the-editor, and opinion editorials
    • Monitor and make available to President/CEO and Senior Staff newspaper, radio, online and television accounts of newsworthy items of specific interest relating to reproductive healthcare
    • Responsible for all activities related to conceptualizing and implementing a market branding strategy, including social media, and achieving marketing targets
    • Protect and maintain the PPLA brand, including coordinating production of affiliate marketing materials and working in partnership with other departments to ensure that all collateral materials meet content standards, quality, branding and style guidelines
    • Synthesize a wide range of variables pertaining to client recruitment/retention, including client patterns, health center capacity, and public data to inform marketing strategies
    • Design and lead multi-pronged, targeted marketing campaigns aimed at specific sites or services
    • Develop metrics to evaluate marketing tactics and programs; collaborate with Patient Services and IT to capture key data points; compile and disseminate regular reports
    • Lead agency’s brand initiatives; ensure brand continuity throughout agency including throughout the agency’s facilities and online presence
    • Oversee department budget and reporting including: forecasting needs, long range planning, and monitoring monthly statements to resolve discrepancies
    • Manage strategic planning, goal setting, budget process and coordination of services
    • Manage performance of communications vendors and subcontractors
    • In support of PPLA’s workplace values, identify and report errors, near misses, and employee, patient and customer safety concerns in a timely manner
    • Support risk and quality management by proactively communicating identified risks in order to minimize risk when possible
    • Work closely with Chief External Affairs Officer and PPAP staff to ensure understanding of the difference between the 501 c3 (PPLA) and 501 c4 (PPAP)
    • Develop and disseminate content which promotes Planned Parenthood in a positive light and keeps the agency’s messages in the forefront of public awareness
    • Oversee strategy for all social media platforms, websites, and online communications for PPLA; coordinate with Community Education and Development to meet agency’s need and ensure best-practices are followed
    • Collaborate as needed with national (PPFA), state (PPAC) and other Planned Parenthood affiliates so strategies and message development is in alignment
    • Speak and make presentations to groups, as appropriate
    • Ensure successful rollout of new projects or special initiatives and direct such projects/initiatives as needed
    • Supervise teams of consultants including but not limited to marketing, communications, and related vendors
    • Work with agency leaders to examine and provide solutions and alternatives in dynamic health care environment; ensure operations are effectively managed to support patient engagement, recruitment and retention goals (training, call center, billing, IT, etc.)
