Planned Parenthood of Maryland (PPM) is a not-for-profit family planning agency that provides high-quality, affordable reproductive health care for women, men, and teens. The Accountant will perform a variety of professional accounting work including processing of financial transactions, payroll processing, maintenance of the general ledger, preparation and analysis of internal reports necessary for budgeting and financial control, and assisting in the preparation and analysis of Financial reports for the Board, Government, Agencies, and Grantors. The Accountant reports to the Sr. Director of Accounting & Revenue Cycle.

The position is Hybrid: 3 days per week work-in-office and 2 days per week work-from-home.

Essential Responsibilities:

    • Processing of financial transactions:
    • Managing accounts payable using accounting software.
    • Managing payroll processing using payroll software.
    • Analyzing workflow processes and making recommendations for improvements.
    • Ensuring invoices and payroll are paid in a timely and accurate manner while adhering to policies and procedures.
    • Processing transactions and performing account maintenance, recording entries and reconciling accounts.

    • Performance of the accounting functions:
    • Support the maintenance and integrity of the general ledger and perform balance sheet account analysis monthly along with periodic analyses of selected revenue and expense items.
    • Support the preparation of financial information, analyses and supporting documentation to facilitate the annual financial audit with independent auditors.

    • Financial reporting:
    • Assist in the preparation of timely and accurate monthly financial statements for eventual preparation to the Board of Directors.
    • Prepares ad-hoc reporting and analyses as needed for the CFO, COAO, CEO, department heads and Board of Directors.
    • Prepares internal reporting as needed.
    • Participates in the development of the annual budget with input from all department heads and collaboration with the Senior Director of Accounting and Revenue.  Prepares supporting documentation for presentation to the Board of Directors. 
    • Prepares timely and accurate reports that compare actual expenses with budget to allow department heads to monitor and control expenses.

    • Other duties as assigned. 

Required Qualifications, Knowledge and Skills:

    • Education/Experience: 
    • Bachelors degree in Accounting required.
    • Two (2) years of professional accounting experience to include: accounts payable, payroll, reconciliations, variance reports, and knowledge of GAAP.
    • Expert level experience with Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, V-lookups, formulas).
    • Healthcare, ADP or MIP experience is not required but highly preferred.

    • Knowledge: Principles, practices, and methods of accounting and auditing, financial administration including reporting, accounting software and spreadsheet applications.

    • Skills: Examining and verifying financial documents and reports; developing accounting procedures and forms; working independently from general instructions; communicating clearly and concisely, orally and in writing; ability plan, organize and control multiple tasks simultaneously; ability to recognize, select and use Generally Accepted Accounting Principles in recording and reporting financial information; ability to communicate and interact with clients, staff Board members, vendors, and the public in a positive professional manner. 

    • Confidentiality: May be exposed to confidential information whose disclosure would be contrary to the best interest of the agency, the patient, facility and professional ethics.
