STARTING SALARY: $57,000 per year

Position Description
Reporting directly to the Education Manager , the Patient Advocacy Organizer and Educator is primarily responsible for building relationships with patients and health centers and working to bridge PPMI’s health center, education, and advocacy work. This position will work to educate individuals and community stakeholders while also expanding awareness and utilization of PPMI Health Services. This staff person will fully embody a commitment to race equity; evidenced in all interactions with PPMI colleagues and external stakeholders.
 
The Patient Advocacy Program is Planned Parenthood’s national effort to work with Patients & Health Centers on increasing involvement in sex education, sexual and reproductive health advocacy and increasing access care. Planned Parenthood of Michigan is seeking a program organizer to build sustainable relationships with patients and health centers and to integrate our health services with opportunities for education and advocacy. The organizer will, run a Patient Advocacy Program that includes but is not limited to identifying volunteer leaders and storytellers, hosting community care events in partnership with patients and health centers, training volunteers and community stakeholders on PPMI’s model of patient and community care, and collaborating with health centers to develop volunteer opportunities and trainings. Successful candidates will ensure the centering of patients and health centers in the reproductive health and abortion access narrative, engage Patient & Health Center leaders and storytellers, and support communities to advocate for sexual and reproductive healthcare and abortion access.
 
Essential Functions:
●      Demonstrate a commitment to race equity. Maintains current knowledge of PPMI’s work toward enhanced race equity standards, is held accountable to them and holds team members accountable.
 
External Relations & Volunteer Engagement
●      This position requires significant contact with the public and serves as the face of PPMI and PPAM in local communities.
●      Actively participates in identifying tabling, volunteer recruitment, public speaking, and other visibility opportunities and works with supervisor to prioritize those opportunities.
●      Responsible for directing activities of supporters and volunteers, volunteer engagement, and activities that support awareness and advocacy campaigns.
●      Build, implement and execute initiatives designed to recruit and increase the participation of Patient & Health Center supporters, volunteers, and activists in sexual and reproductive health advocacy 
o   Initiatives include but are not limited to: storytelling, clinic escorting, mutual aid training and volunteer opportunities, and the Health Center Advocacy program.
●      Maintains relationships with vendors as it relates to the purview of this position.
●      Develop training and training materials related to the implementation of programs under the purview of this position.
●      Interpret, apply, and recommend changes to departmental policies and procedures where purposeful.
●      Maintain currency in effective and efficient outreach and organizing campaign tactics and techniques.
●      Recruit, develop, and mobilize volunteers for sexual and reproductive healthcare through SCOTUS fights, legislative sessions, and elections.
●      Supports the work of the External Affairs team to advance a pro-sexual and reproductive health policy agenda.
●      Participates in large-scale advocacy initiatives such as Lobby Days and Action Summits.
●      Supports electoral initiatives through Michigan Planned Parenthood Votes Super PAC and Planned Parenthood of Michigan PAC, helping to educate and mobilize voters on candidates and policies affecting reproductive health and education.
●      Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
 
Cross-functional Collaboration
●      The program organizer will build, expand and deepen relationships with internal PPMI departments to ensure we are bridging our work with patient care, education, and advocacy.
●      The program organizer will build, expand and deepen relationships with partner organizations to ensure we are a part of and contribute to an inclusive and intersectional advocacy community.
●      Work in close coordination with Planned Parenthood’s national organizing team to engage and grow a base of patients and health center supporters to build power for the reproductive health movement in their respective communities
●      Align program goals with national and PPAM goals
●      Serve as a liaison to PPFA and other partner organizations as it relates to the purview of this position
●      Collaborate with Field and Outreach teams to execute goals
●      Provide onboarding and support for staff related to the implementation of programs under the purview of this position.
●      Work with Government Relations team to further cross-functional objectives.
●      Maintain currency in current legislative and electoral news.
 
Needs Assessments, Metrics, and Reporting
●      Implement data collection tools to identify and assess the needs of constituency groups including patients in targeted communities
●      Build capacity for these constituency programs to contribute to the creation, maintenance, and enhancement of statewide supporters and Membership lists.
●      Manage, track, and report on grants related to the programs under the purview of this position.
●      Develop measures of success and regularly monitors and reports on metrics.
●      Reviews progress of assignments with management.

Desired:
●      Familiarity with the Voter Activation Network (VAN) and MiniVAN software
 
 
Qualifications and Experience
●      Two to five of relevant experience in Community or Field Organizing, Political Science, Social Justice and/or Community Engagement work, or related fields.
OR
●      Any equivalent combination of experience, education, and/or training approved by hiring decision makers.
