Keeping Planned Parenthood’s doors open to all people for the next 100 years depends on a proactive and innovative effort to lift up and amplify the voices of community members who depend upon its essential and equitable sexual health services.  Planned Parenthood of Northern New England's Patient Advocacy program seeks to educate and engage individuals in both in the health center as well as out in the community about Planned Parenthood’s advocacy work in Vermont.
 
Planned Parenthood of Northern New England is seeking personable and friendly volunteers to engage with health center guests in the waiting rooms and in the surrounding communities of our Burlington and Williston Health Centers. In 2019, volunteers will speak to individuals about efforts to protect access to reproductive freedom through state law as well as empower everyone to share their personal experience with abortion, contraception, ability to access services needed, etc. to help illustrate that reproductive freedom is a civil right essential for people to lead happy, healthy lives.
 
Volunteers will undergo training on how to effectively and legally speak with about advocacy work in the health center.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Speak with guests in the waiting room and community about Planned Parenthood’s 2019 legislative priorities
Collect health center guest stories
 
OPTIONAL VOLUNTEER RESPONSIBILITIES: Interested volunteers can receive additional training to interview advocacy story tellers over the phone and/or support or organize outreach events in the community.
 
Requirements/Qualifications:
Comfortable listening to people’s complicated health problems or experiences
Ability to problem solve
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; experience in public speaking a plus
Self-motivated and able to work independently with limited supervision
Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
Must show up on time and as scheduled
Basic computer skills preferred
 
ROLE REQUIREMENTS: All potential applicants will need to pass a background check before being accepted into the program.   Volunteers will be required to make a minimum commitment of two 2 hour long shifts per month and maximum of up to 6 hours a month if interested in supporting additional volunteer responsibilities within the program.  Internships also available for undergraduate students seeking academic credit.
