The Nurse Practitioner provides direct health care services under the direction of the Medical Director and in accordance with the PPSE Medical Standards and Guidelines. This role is responsible for initiating and following-up on the medical care for clients seeking family planning and for providing supportive care for clients seeking abortion care. The Nurse Practitioner is a member of the health care team and serves as a clinical resource for staff.
 
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

       Clinical Care
o   Practice to the top of license and full extent of the law in accordance with Planned Parenthood Southeast’s Medical Standards and Guidelines (MS&Gs), state and federal laws and regulations, and PPSE’s policies and procedures
o   Provides quality Family Planning and Primary Care services according to protocols
o   Completes exam and identifies normal and abnormal findings
o   Appropriately diagnoses and treats per protocol
o   Administer medications and insert/remove long acting reversible contraception per protocols
o   Meet quality assurance requirements, including the appropriate dispensing of medications and participation in quality assurance activities
o   Perform, order, and interpret screening and diagnostic testing; address abnormal findings
o   Develop medical management plans and provides patient instruction regarding plan of care, referrals, preventive education, and health promotion and maintenance
o   Assess and follow up on interventions and/or referral progress as specified in the MS&Gs
o   Refers patients with abnormal conditions or other medical problems outside the scope of practice for PPSE
o   Provides patient education and counseling in the family planning, preventative medicine, and abortion care settings, including state mandated counseling
o   Documents clearly all patient care and follow-up according to protocols; including: patient history, physical findings, assessment, treatment and education in patient’s medical record. Also documents follow-up in patient’s medical record and on appropriate logs along with recording services provided and related diagnoses on charge tickets.
o   Demonstrates proficiency in PPSE’s Electronic Health Record (EHR) system
o   Participates in ultrasound training and performs ultrasound scans to confirm and date pregnancy, as well as post-termination scans
o   May assist Physician with one or more of the following clinical procedures: medication abortion, in-clinic abortion procedure, ultrasound, vasectomies, colposcopies, and biopsies
o   Performs lab tests according to protocols
o   Performs wet mount preparation and collection of Pap Smear and other specimens
o   Accurately identifies wet prep organisms
o   Properly handles and labels all specimens, including disposal
o   Initiates and monitors follow-up care
o   Participates in PPSE’s after-hours call rotation
o   Reviews lab data and orders appropriate additional laboratory investigations when indicated
o   Provides follow-up on abnormal labs according to PPSE Standards & Guidelines
o   Makes appropriate medical and/or social referrals
o   Monitors labs and referrals for completion of care
o   Oversees recovery room as needed when procedures are being performed 
o   Takes call from the answering service and is available at all times during scheduled on-call time
o   Promptly contacts the patients after notification from the answering service
o   Triage patients and gives advice according to PPSE Medical Standards and Guidelines
o   Consults physician or refers patients to emergency room per protocol if medically necessary
o   Notifies PPSE of all emergency room or hospital referrals by phone the next morning
o   Completes EHR documentation from after-hours calls prior the next business morning for each client advice consultation


       Productivity & Management
o   Under the supervision of the Health Center Manager, maintains busy clinic flow, helps other staff as needed, and willing to work-in clients as requested
o   Provide patient-centered care and assures smooth and efficient patient and clinic flow processes
o   Completes thorough, accurate charting; works in an efficient manner and completes tasks and projects on time
o   Demonstrates sound independent decision-making and stays current with latest protocols
o   Works independently without specific or continual instruction
o   Consults Medical Director as appropriate
o   Attends regularly scheduled  provider meetings
o   Stay up-to-date on reproductive health care developments and maintain CEU requirements for required licensure and certification
o   Is reliable, efficient and maintains productivity; safely meets productivity goals
o   Maintains and protects patient confidentiality at all times.
 
       Additional Responsibilities
o   Be forthcoming and truthful in responding to Alabama Department of Public Health inquiries and requests for information
o   Ability to travel throughout PPSE’s service area for training and clinic coverage if needed
o   Other duties as required
 
QUALIFICATIONS
 
Education
       Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
       Active Nursing License for Alabama
       Certified Nurse Practitioner or Certified Nurse Midwife, with a specialty in Women’s Health, Adult Health, or Family Health     
       CPR training and certification
 
Experience
       At least one year experience as a practitioner in a Women’s Health, Adult Health or Family Health setting
 
Skills
       Excellent clinical skills and decision-making ability
       Must be interested in and have the ability to work well with diverse populations
       Good communication skills and ability to give counsel and patient education on a one to one basis
       Able to work independently and be a self-starter
       Able to multi-task, prioritize and maintain productivity
       Good computer skills including internet/email                     
 
Physical Demands
       Ability to stand and sit for extended periods of time
 
Languages Spoken
       English required, some Spanish speaking skills preferred.
