POSITION:              Bilingual Health Center Assistant                                        DEPARTMENT:  Patient Services
REPORTS TO:         Director of Nursing                                        STATUS:  Non-Exempt (Full-Time)

JOB SUMMARY:
The Bilingual Health Center Assistant is responsible for scheduling appointments, providing patient education, and performing clerical work and a variety of medical support services for all surgical clients. Help ensure that surgical patients care from admit to release is consistent with PPSWO protocols and operating procedures.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.      Prior to surgery, provide supportive education, assure informed consent, review contraceptive choices, and complete necessary forms for patient records.
2.      Assist physician and support patient during procedure as necessary.
3.      Perform receptionist duties, including collecting patient fees and maintaining accurate financial records.  Enter visit data into computer.
4.      Make appointments for all surgical patients.
5.      Perform necessary laboratory services and maintain appropriate laboratory records.  Follow laboratory requirements as defined in PPFA and PPSWO medical standards and guidelines and CLIA regulations.
6.      Perform examination on tissue.  Prepare specimens for storage or pick-up.
7.      Assist with preparation, cleaning, sterilization and stocking of equipment and rooms.
8.      Perform ultrasound with physician consultation.  Perform intra-operative ultrasound with direct surgeon.
9.      Fully participate in all health center efforts related to patient care, customer service, productivity and clinic flow.
10.  Secure patients’ signature on the consent forms and assure that all necessary documents relative to consents are in order.
11.  Utilize PPSWO’s practice management system and electronic medical record system effectively.
12.  Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
 
 
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
·         High School Diploma or GED.  
·         Certificate or professional training in healthcare and/or experience in a healthcare setting preferred.
·         Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred.
·         Demonstrated skills in working with the public and excellent customer service.
·         Good verbal and written communication skills.
·         Basic clerical and math skills required.
·         Able to write and speak English
·         Ability to operate a computer, keyboard and multi-key telephone.
·         Ability to function well as a team member.
·         Ability to treat patients with respect and sensitivity.
·         Ability to communicate professionally with individuals of diverse backgrounds in a non-judgmental manner.
·         Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sensitivity in dealing with clients sexuality and reproductive healthcare choices.
·         Must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings and Saturdays.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:
·         Ability to lift and /or move up to 25 pounds, sit, talk, hear, stand, bend, walk; use hands and fingers, handle or operate objects, reach with hands and arms; climb and balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and use repetitive motions of the hands and wrists.
·         Ability to get to the work site; also other PPSWO health centers and meetings when required.
·         May be exposed to communicable diseases and blood and body fluids that may contain HIV and/or HBV. 
·         May be exposed to cleaning chemicals and offensive odors.
