YOUR IMPACT
As an HTS Magnet Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in this mission by focusing on the modeling, design, and prototyping of cutting-edge HTS magnet systems for our stellarator devices. Working on-site with our team in Villigen, you will explore innovative magnet concepts and turn them into real hardware! This role will primarily involve advanced simulation and analysis of HTS magnets, with the potential and need to grow into a broader position that also entails hands-on work and testing. Your work will directly contribute to building the world’s first-of-its-kind HTS stellarator magnet and bringing fusion energy closer to reality!
WHAT YOU WILL DO
-Advanced Simulations
Use COMSOL or in-house tools to run detailed electromagnetic and thermal simulations of HTS cables, coils, and magnets. Predict key performance metrics and analyze quench behavior and stability.
-Prototyping and Testing
Design, build, and test prototype HTS magnet components. Set up lab tests—often with external partners—to validate designs and demonstrate performance of our novel non-planar stellarator magnet.
-Cross-Team Collaboration
Work with stellarator design, optimization, and engineering teams to integrate magnet constraints into the reactor concept. Provide reduced-order models and expert input to ensure subsystem compatibility.
-Scaling to Fusion Power Plants
Contribute to the conceptual design of future fusion power plants. Develop scalable HTS magnet solutions for full-scale, commercially viable stellarator reactors.
WHO YOU ARE
- Master’s or PhD in electrical/mechanical engineering, physics, or a related field. Strong technical foundation.
- Deep understanding of HTS magnet physics, including quench behavior and screening currents.
- Skilled in EM and thermal simulations using tools like COMSOL.
-Lab-savvy with experience building or testing EM or cryogenic systems.
-Creative and collaborative, eager to drive early-stage design with a team.
