Scientist/Senior Research Associate, Protein Expression

Cambridge, MA
Biomolecular Discovery – Biochemistry, Biophysics, Structural Biology
Full-time

The Opportunity

    • Our team puts protein motion in the center of drug discovery. We work on targets representing highly unmet medical needs. Once expressed and purified we apply high quality cutting edge technology towards the discovery, characterization and optimization of small molecule therapeutics. Are you ready to join us and discover the next generation of innovative therapeutics based on protein motion?
    • We are looking for a highly motivated, creative and meticulous scientist with in-depth knowledge and expertise in recombinant protein expression in insect and mammalian cells to join our Biomolecular Discovery team.

Your Role

    • You will contribute to protein construct design and use our baculovirus/BacMam platform to screen constructs in insect and mammalian cells and express them at a large scale to support Relay’s drug discovery programs.
    • You will develop and implement procedures for the purification of challenging proteins and use state-of-the-art biochemical/biophysical tools to assess the homogeneity and stability of these proteins.
    • You will play an important role in the implementation of new technologies to further enhance our protein expression platform in terms of automation, throughput and production scale.
    • You will be responsible for the interpretation and documentation of your data, and for the presentation of your results to multidisciplinary project teams.
    • Your voice is important, and we will count on you to contribute to group knowledge and expertise through collaboration and idea exchange across teams.

Your Background

    • You earned a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Biochemistry, Biophysics or a related field.
    • You have spent at least 5 or more years gaining relevant industry experience.
    • A firm understanding of protein biochemistry is essential, as well as in-depth knowledge and expertise in the expression of proteins in an industry setting.
    • You are highly skilled in transposition (bacmid)-based baculovirus expression and have used this technology to express proteins at a large scale in insect and/or mammalian cells.
    • You have experience in purifying proteins using the FPLC (AKTA) system via a variety of chromatographic techniques, and in the analysis of protein homogeneity, stability and post-translational modifications via methods such as SDS-PAGE, WB, F-SEC, nanoDSF, DLS, SEC-MALS and mass spectrometry.
    • A natural problem solver, you have a demonstrated ability to solve protein production challenges and an aptitude for thriving in a fast-paced, collaborative work environment.
    • You are an articulate, open communicator with the ability to analyze, interpret and present data in a clear manner.
    • Experience in protein engineering and automated, high throughput workflows for expression screening in insect/mammalian cells is a big plus.
We believe in building balanced teams and a place where our people can be their full self every day. We encourage people from underrepresented backgrounds to apply.

About Relay Therapeutics
Relay Therapeutics is a new breed of company at the intersection of computation and biotechnology that is committed to creating medicines that will have a transformative impact on patients.

We combine unprecedented computational power with leading-edge experimental approaches across the fields of structural biology, biophysics, chemistry, and biology. This integration illuminates – for the first time – the full mobility of a protein and provides key insights into how the dynamic nature of a protein’s conformation regulates function. The team at Relay is putting this principle into practice, with the aim of accelerating the development of medicines that will make a transformative difference in patients’ lives. We don't just stare hard problems in the face. We go out looking for them. Are you energized by attempting to do the impossible? We're looking for you.

At Relay, our team is driven by the ultimate collaboration across each of our drug discovery disciplines. Putting protein motion at the heart of drug discovery is a challenge, but we are confident that our team’s dedication and urgency will create opportunities that deeply impact the lives of the patients.  Our initial programs are focused on developing therapeutics in oncology.
