Lead Product Designer
San Francisco, CA or New York City, NY /
Our mission is to make world-class software security available to everyone. This means building program analysis tools that are open source, easy to use, powerful, and fast. It also means building a team with security expertise and a passion for great developer experiences. Most of all, it means working with honesty and respect in a diverse community of dreamers and builders. We’ve redefined static analysis tooling by committing to all of these, and turned our project, Semgrep, into an essential safeguard for code at Snowflake, Dropbox, and more.
About the role
We’re looking for an experienced Product Designer to help grow our small, but mighty product team. Together, we’ll collaborate and build world-class developer-focused product experiences in a creative and iterative environment. As a member of our product team, you’ll help mature our open source and paid products, taking them from a flawed “works end-to-end” state to an exquisite “I can’t believe they thought of that!” future. You’ll be instrumental in making complex workflows and technical topics accessible to a broad audience of security and software engineers, securing the world’s most important code along the way.
Through r2c’s culture of collaboration and impact, you’ll see, and influence, the decisions that make an early-stage startup successful. As a member of a small team, your contributions and decisions will affect every aspect of what we build and do. Let’s define “great” in the security and developers tools space, together!
What you'll do
1. Rapidly prototype and research new concepts, proposed solutions, and user hypotheses alongside product managers, engineers, and business leads
2. Cultivate design self-sufficiency amongst the broader team, empowering them to make tactical design decisions
3. Advocate for simple, consistent, and delightfully thoughtful product workflows across r2c
4. Meet with users every week to capture their needs and be an internal voice for them
5. Contribute to and lead strategic decisions around product definitions and roadmaps, grounding decisions in user needs and insights
6. Ship beautiful products
You are ideal for this role if you have
-4+ years of of product design experience working on digital products; a plus if your work includes developer-focused, B2B, or enterprise products
-A strong understanding of software engineering, through a Bachelor’s degree in the field, an engineering bootcamp, or equivalent professional experience
-A desire to do hands-on research on an early-stage team, from planning and recruiting to analysis and insights delivery
-An obsession over your users and the problems they’re trying to solve
-An ability to work quickly through multiple iterations while maintaining strong attention to detail
-Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Some example projects that you might work on include
-Designing a Semgrep Editor (IDE) that makes it simple to write and share powerful Semgrep rules with the community
-Identifying automatable and recurring workflow patterns amongst target users, making it unbelievably simple for them to get great Semgrep results
-Choosing, codifying, and teaching our UI/UX components and patterns to the broader team to enable them to self-serve and “do the right thing” without a dedicated designer for a project
$160,000 - $185,000 a year
What we offer
Our goal is to competitively and fairly compensate every r2cer with a system that equally rewards those who are vocal and those who are less comfortable making demands during the final steps of the hiring process. To that end, we generate internal compensation bands that are used when discussing and negotiating salaries. We update these based on market data to make sure they’re above the average for comparable roles.
We also invest in our employees’ well-being and long term success with comprehensive health plans, generous vacation time, learning stipends, and more. Our benefits are for everyone, so that you’re taken care of, and we work with individuals to make sure they have what they need, whether that’s quiet work space, adjusted hours, or any other accommodation.
Who we are
We have people from France and the Philippines, physics and philosophy, formal methods research and full fledged corporations. We’re new parents and new grads, aspiring authors and adrenaline addicts, dog lovers and dogfooders. We get together often to bike, bake, and meet up in parks. In our interactions, we believe respect and honesty go hand in hand, and prioritize both.
