Zūm is an organization which is on the crest of exploding into the US student transportation business. With contracts in multiple locations in California, Washington, and Maryland. The Director of Safety position is responsible for overseeing and reducing motor vehicle accidents and work-related injuries, and ensuring OSHA and DOT compliance, through the development and implementation of local plans. The Director assists each location to professionally develop their safety and training staff. This position is the functional expert and will coordinate with location management to improve safety and training processes and help create a “safety culture” to line personnel. This position provides leadership and direction for our safety programs.
Responsibilities:
- Assisting each location management team in developing a vehicle accident and work-related injury prevention plan based on loss data and cause analysis
- Assisting each location management team in the consistent implementation and maintenance of Company-defined safety and training processes and systems
- Providing safety-related consulting services, resources and materials to each location management team
- Reviewing the monthly loss control key indicators report comparing vehicle accident and work-related injury performance with AOP goals; determining why variances occur and participating in corrective action taken in response to each variance
- Developing and implementing safety awareness programs; researching and recommending safety incentive programs
- Developing and implementing safety communication and training programs • Attending and making presentations at monthly safety meetings, start-up meetings and safety committee meetings
- Developing Safety and Training Supervisors' professional skills, including presentation, teaching, investigation, employee selection and evaluation
- Providing safety training to location management team in accordance with Company-developed curriculum
- Communicating with safety and training supervisors regularly
- Assisting in training new safety committees
- Assisting in selecting and training new safety and training supervisors
- Conducting facility safety inspections and program audits to ensure compliance with Company policies and government regulations
- Assisting in evaluating classroom trainers and btw trainers
- Assisting each General Manager in evaluating the locations' Safety and Training Supervisor's performance and the location safety and training program effectiveness
- Overseeing implementation and on-going compliance of Company programs including: Defensive driving, Passenger management, Adverse weather/terrain driving, Accident & injury investigation and reporting, Post-accident & injury follow-up with employees, Monthly safety meetings, Safety Committees, including accident/injury review, Road-E-O competitions, Employee section processes, and Other safety programs as assigned
- Overseeing implementation and on-going compliance of Company programs mandated by government regulations including: California's SB-198 and Injury/Illness Prevention Plan, OSHA and DOT safety regulations compliance, Pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections, Hazardous Materials storage, handling, disposal, and employee right-to-know, and other safety programs as assigned
- Assisting General Managers in preparing the Safety and Training sections of the Annual Operating Plan (AOP), including staffing plans and key indicator goals
- Conduct special projects as requested by the Executive Vice President of Student Transportation
Requirements:
- BA/BS in Business, Industrial Safety, Engineering, or equivalent experience
- 5+ years of comprehensive safety or loss control experience in ground transportation
- Experience with fleet of 600 vehicles or larger, and safety programs involving 600 or more employees
- Well-developed communication, interpersonal, and training skills
- Strong computer, analytical and organizational skills
- Must be able to travel, position requires approximately 70% field work
The targeted base salary range for this role is listed in the compensation section below. Actual salary may be above or below this range based on factors such as location, skills, and relevant experience. In addition, this position may include additional compensation in the form of bonus, equity, or commissions.
