Reporting to the Payroll Director and working in collaboration with cross functional partners. Managing a Payroll Department of 20+ through mentoring, Leading and guiding staff in a highly demanding and fast-paced environment.  The position is committed toward continuous improvement in accuracy, efficiency, and service levels to ensure readiness for growth and the ability to provide superior service. In addition, this position works very closely with the payroll director and helps develop and execute a vision for future processes and systems including project implementation plans and monitoring & reporting of process improvement initiatives. being an expert in compliance with federal and state laws as they impact compensation and tax reporting, and knowledge of the terms of the various (CBA’s) Collective Bargaining Agreements under which some of the Company’s employees may be compensated.  The position also provides professional development opportunities for the payroll team and works closely with payroll director in documentation (SOP), implementation, and improvement of the payroll policies and procedures; takes ownership of software systems that support payroll processing and reporting; organize, assign, manage, review and evaluate the work of assigned staff. The role must stay abreast of the latest developments in the legal and Union landscape and serve as the subject matter expert on all payroll issues. In partnership with cross functional teams, the position also guides payroll team toward resolution of compensation issues to ensure compliance with the law yet address practicality of proposed solutions and is very hands-on with the Company’s payroll objectives and processing. 

Responsibilities:

    • Ensure all union payrolls are processed on time, compliantly and within our SLAs. 
    • Remove and/or resolve issues that are escalated internally and externally as it relates to processing payroll. 
    • Understand Mass Transit Systems payroll collective bargaining agreements and how to synthesize complex collective bargaining agreements into simple mathematical rules 
    • Responsible for setting team and individual goals to ensure the team is meeting its objectives to support broader company goals. 
    • Build and operationalize capacity planning models to ensure we are optimizing our resources while providing the best customer experience. 
    • Partner with cross-functional teams to build new systems, tools, and processes to build a solid foundation for scale. Push beyond the status quo and think how we can improve with and without product support. 
    • Ensure the team engages with customers and other third parties directly to resolve issues promptly. 
    • Ensure all Payroll standard operating procedures are well documented, and the team is fully cross trained to allow for redundancy 
    • Partner with the product team to clearly articulate what tools the team needs to be effective. 
    • Create and document processes as we identify gaps in our current system and workflows. 
    • Continue to stay up to date on all union agreements and/or industry news that may impact payroll processes. 

Requirements:

    • Must have a minimum of 5 years’ experience in the union-based payroll industry. 
    • Must have at least 3 years’ experience managing a team 
    • Must have the ability to hand-break time cards to manually check calculations 
    • Technologically savvy with the ability to pick up new systems and programs quickly. 
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills 
    • A customer-first approach. You enjoy engaging with clients, resolving issues, and deepening engagement. 
    • Experience in a high-growth transit/technology company is preferred 
    • Experience working with cross-functional teams 
    • Four-year college degree preferred 
    • CPP Preferred  
The targeted base salary range for this role is listed in the compensation section below. Actual salary may be above or below this range based on factors such as location, skills, and relevant experience. In addition, this position may include additional compensation in the form of bonus, equity, or commissions.
