QE 1 - Physics
QPU – Quantum Engineering
Our entry-level Quantum Engineer (QE) 1 position offers a unique path to the frontier of quantum computing. As a quantum engineer, your mission will be to accelerate the development of our quantum hardware -- the superconducting circuits and control systems at the heart of our technology. You'll work alongside senior engineers in this pursuit, joining your creativity, problem solving, and eagerness to learn with the team at Rigetti.
There are four QE 1 tracks appropriate for candidates' interests and experience: Physics, Hardware, Fabrication and Software. Candidates in the QE 1 Physics track typically come from Physics, EE, and/or Math backgrounds. Physics QE 1s primarily work in one of the following areas:
Physics QE 1 Areas:
- Quantum Engineering: integrating, testing, and benchmarking quantum computers.
- Device Design & Theory: designing the quantum behavior of the system from theoretical models to chip layout.
- B.S. or M.S. degree in Physics, EE, ME, CS (2019 graduates who are about to graduate, and early 2020 graduates will also be considered)
- Strong appetite for learning
- Extraordinary communication skills and strong programming ability

Rigetti Computing is on a mission to build the world’s most powerful computers. Based in Berkeley and Fremont, CA, we are scientists, engineers, builders, and visionaries who believe quantum computing is going to significantly affect health care, how we treat disease, how we generate energy, and how we feed humanity. We design and fabricate quantum circuits and deploy them as quantum computers available online. Our engineers build the full stack of technologies that are integrated into these machines, including cryogenic hardware and microwave circuitry, advanced analog and digital control modules, and a software stack that provides the world’s most advanced SDK and runtime environment for quantum computers. Our quantum computer is available through Our product, Quantum Cloud Services, which is the world’s first full-stack programming and execution environment for quantum/classical computing. We were founded by Chad Rigetti in 2013, and today employ over 140 people.
