Junior Quantum Engineering – Physics
Rigetti Computing is developing cloud-deployed quantum computers to solve humanity's most pressing problems. We are a highly diverse and interdisciplinary team of scientists and engineers working on groundbreaking technology in an entrepreneurial environment.

During your internship we will work together to help you gain fluency and hands-on experience across several domains of advanced engineering, physics, and computer science. You will be embedded on a core technical team, and will collaborate with our engineers, including the rest of the intern cohort. Depending on your specific assignment, this can include microwave engineering, cryogenic systems, nanofabrication, superconductivity, machine learning, quantum error correction, quantum optics, quantum and classical processor architectures, digital and analog signal processing, and quantum operating system software development.

There are three JQE tracks appropriate for candidates' interests and experience: Physics, Hardware, and Software. Candidates in the JQE Physics track typically come from Physics, EE, and/or Math backgrounds.

The JQE position requires a highly diverse skill set with excellent problem-solving ability and creativity. It does not, however, require prior experience in quantum computing.

Physics JQE Internship Focus Areas:

    • Quantum Engineering: integrating, testing, and benchmarking quantum computers
    • Device Design & Theory: designing the quantum behavior of the system from theoretical models to chip layout
    • Applications Research: developing and testing advanced quantum algorithms
    • Fabrication: building the chips in our quantum integrated circuit foundry

About You:

    • B.S. or M.S. degree expected by September 2021 in Physics, EE, ME, CS or related fields
    • Strong appetite for learning
    • Extraordinary communication skills
    • Strong programming ability
    • Demonstrated ability for teamwork and leadership


    • Some knowledge of quantum computing and quantum circuits (this is not a hard prerequisite, but the more you know the better)
    • Academic distinction in relevant coursework
    • Research experience
