Lower School Spanish Head Teacher (2021/2022)
River Campus /
LS – Spanish Department /
Riverdale Country School is a Pre-K through grade 12 independent school in New York City committed to empowering lifelong learners by developing minds, building character, and creating community in order to change our world for the good. Riverdale seeks to reflect the diversity of the New York metropolitan area in its students, faculty, and staff. Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) is the foundational core of the anti-racist, anti-bias, and transformational work that Riverdale is doing to help students, faculty/staff, families, and alumni feel seen, heard, and valued. The school enrolls about 1,200 students who collectively reside in 104 different zip codes. Approximately 42% of our student body are students of color.
We seek to employ people who engage in all aspects of work with a student-centered approach, an open mind, passion, and a willingness to support the greater community. At Riverdale we recognize that the work of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging is iterative and requires a consistent commitment. Ideal candidates display that commitment in their work and in their approach to teaching and learning.
As the world faces the immense challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic, Riverdale Country School continues to prioritize the health, safety, and well-being of its community members. Individuals are required to wear masks at all times except when eating and our strict adherence to physical distancing guidelines means that we limit the number of students in our classrooms. We currently provide free ongoing COVID-19 testing for all employees and also require students to be tested regularly. We are fortunate to have a sprawling campus with ample outdoor space and have upgraded the air filtration systems in our buildings. These elements have allowed us to maintain a rich learning experience for students during this difficult time.
Position Overview and Responsibilities:
Each Head Teacher works closely with an Associate Teacher, which allows us to create teaching pairs in all classrooms. Our class sizes at Riverdale have approximately 20 students and this strong teacher-to-student ratio supports faculty in cultivating deep relationships and a sense of belonging for each child. We have three teaching pairs within the Spanish team, each of which is assigned specific grade levels to support within our Spanish program. Our Spanish team has worked extremely diligently in recent years to further develop a curriculum that focuses on linguistic proficiency in Spanish as well as an increased understanding of the vast realms of culture and heritage within Spanish-speaking communities around the world.
Faculty members are expected to engage in all aspects of work with an open mind, a positive disposition, and a willingness to support the greater community. Additionally, Riverdale seeks candidates who are committed to work in the areas of equity, justice, and inclusion. A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree is required for the position. Preference is given to those who have experience working with younger learners and have completed coursework in a related field of study.
Please apply directly through the school’s website by submitting a cover letter and resume. In your cover letter, please indicate where you learned about the position.
