About the Role

You’ll bring to the role a passion for building secure, robust, and high performance distributed systems. The ideal candidate will be a top-notch Linux expert with a devops and SRE focus and experience in fast-paced, dynamic environments.

In this role you will have responsibility for the availability and performance of Rocket Lawyer’s cloud infrastructure, software delivery and engineering productivity. You will have an exceptional track record in leading global teams and successfully building reliable production cloud infrastructure. 

We are looking for a supportive and inspirational leader to help our SRE and DevOps teams meet the demands of rapid global expansion and customer onboarding. As a leader in the Cloud Platforms organization, you will hire, retain, and mentor leaders and engineers to take on the challenges of supporting a platform that is always-on with industry-leading availability and uptime.

The Person

    • Develop a world class globally distributed cloud team of devops and SRE and directly responsible for the availability and reliability of Rocket Lawyer’s cloud platform
    • Own Cloud operations, infrastructure and deployments including CI / CD pipelines, monitoring, and budgeting
    • Manage the recruitment and on-boarding of new starters
    • Facilitate well thought-out technical decisions
    • Promote best practices to the wider engineering community
    • Design and develop tools to improve developer productivity
    • Lead the incident management process to ensure smooth running of systems with minimal customer impact. 
    • Creates a culture of continuous learning from mistakes  
    • Advocate for and advances modern software development practices (CI/CD, test automation etc.)Is passionate about constantly improving the way the team is working
    • Support the engineering team to help them perform at their highest level
    • Always look to bring out the best in others
    • Take a pragmatic approach to balancing short- and long-term priorities
    • Collaborate with our feature development teams to get new services and APIs to market using the CI/CD tools and processes your team provides
    • Lead development of public cloud strategy and practice

Experience

    • 7+ years experience building and managing high performing engineering teams
    • 5+ years experience supporting production systems that serve 100k + users
    • Experience within an Agile Software delivery environment
    • Proficient in leading engineers to deliver good quality and clean code
    • Knowledge of software engineering best practices, including coding standards, source control management, build processes, and testing
    • Experience in recruiting and hiring engineers
    • Passionate about coaching engineers
    • Passionate about software security, performance and scaling
    • Demonstrated experience with implementing and supporting CI/CD tooling and working with development teams to roll out and manage projects
    • Experience with managing highly available production-facing e-commerce web sites
    • Knowledge of monitoring systems and frameworks (nagios, sensu, graphite, etc.)
    • Experience with build automation (jenkins, go, cloudbuild, cruisecontrol, etc.)
    • Experience in designing / building scalable, highly available, secure cloud solutions.
    • Experience with working with APIs and microservices

Nice to Have

    • Computer science degree or related technical experience preferred
    • Debian Linux/Ubuntu administration and management
    • Experience with release management
    • Experience with Google Cloud and associated core services such as Cloud SQL, Cloud Build, GKE, GCE, Networking, VPC’s, Cloud IAM, Cloud PubSub.
