Position Description
Based in Washington, DC and reporting to the Director of Student Services, the Associate Director of MTSS will be a key strategic leader and a critical contributor to the realization of the vision for MTSS services and Multi-Tiered Systems of Support within Rocketship. At Rocketship, we have made a strong historical commitment to the social-emotional development of our students as well as implementing best practices in supporting behavior. For multiple years, a regular daily component of our school day is a dedicated block to proactively teach social-emotional skills. We have well-built PBIS systems and routines at every campus as well as a well-built out suite of social-emotional and behavior interventions. The Associate Director of MTSS  is responsible for the ongoing elevation of these systems and structures as well as the delivery of many of these services including but not limited to: social-emotional learning, social-emotional & behavioral interventions and supports, etc. Our approach to Multi-Tiered Systems Support (MTSS) serves all students through an innovative approach that includes coaching and deep partnership with our general education partners, integrated special education (ISE) partners, school leaders, and related service providers. To best serve our Rocketeers and meet their needs,  we work to serve students across all areas of need: academic, social-emotional, and behavior.  
The Associate Director of MTSS will lead the Rocketship DC’s MTSS team  to support the three DC school sites in order to ensure execution of high quality interventions and services across all student populations. The Associate Director of MTSS will collaborate with school leaders and the MTSS team by  overseeing and coordinating Rocketship’s Multi-Tiered Systems of Supports (MTSS) framework for academic, social-emotional, and behavioral components. The Associate Director will also participate in the collaborative conversations of the MTSS leads across Rocketship’s five regions.  This position requires experience interacting effectively with senior leadership, school-level administrators, students, parents and  families.

Essential Functions:

MTSS Team Leadership

    • Create a vision and strategy for executing the MTSS process at Rocketship DC
    • Develop and lead a high-performing MTSS Team toward supporting schools in ensuring exceptional outcomes for students and families with unique learning, social-emotional, and behavioral needs; model and sustain a culture of high performance and service orientation among team members 
    • Develop and coach Principals, Assistant Principals, and members of the MTSS Team  to provide the appropriate level of day-to-day support to team 
    • Set high expectations and challenging, yet realistic, goals  and hold staff accountable for achieving goals
    • Promote collaboration and communication within and across teams
    • Support the development of a motivated a team of highly skilled and driven individuals who execute at the highest level of excellence and consistent with the culture and mission of the organization; oversee training and support for all Rocketship MTSS Team members 

MTSS Program Design

    • Design and execute staff professional development opportunities related to MTSS (pre-referral practices, Section 504 plans, behavioral and social-emotional interventions, crisis response,, etc.) for a range of audiences (MTSS counselors, school leaders, special education teachers, general education teachers, etc.). 
    • Design and lead regular team meetings and routines, inspiring and supporting the regional MTSS Team to support the vision for MTSS in Rocketship schools; facilitate learning and sharing of best practices related to MTSS across Rocketship’s MTSS Teams nationwide.
    • Identify and secure resources that support the mental health and MTSS needs of Rocketeers through the MTSS process
    • Manage contracts and relationships with external stakeholders providing mental health services in Rocketship schools

Operational Excellence & Compliance

    • Oversee and ensure implementation of Rocketship’s vision and approach to educationally related mental health services, in partnership with ISE, serving always as a model of meaningful inclusion and contributing to Rocketship Education’s standing as a continued leader in the field for effective, efficient and high-quality services for students with special needs.
    • Maintain a close working relationship with other members of the Network Support Team (NeST—Rocketship’s centralized office that operates in support of its schools and regions), school directors, family partnership, ISE Team, other MTSS Team members, and all school staff (teachers, school leaders, support staff, etc.) 
    • Ensure the MTSS Team is viewed as a positive support to the organization’s mission that are fully aligned with Rocketship’s Core Characteristics (Innovation, Pursuit of Excellence, Authenticity, Community, and Tenacity), and not as bureaucratic obstacles to serving the needs of the students

Contribute to the National Direction of MTSS

    • Implement, develop, and manage Rocketship’s vision and approach to Multi-tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) in collaboration with all key regional stakeholders; ensure high-quality outcomes for all students.
    • Ensure implementation and coaching  of SEL curricula and community meeting
    • Communicates key information about progress toward MTSS goals across teams and regions
    • Facilitate bi-weekly regional MTSS leader meetings to monitor progress by region and share best practices
    • Own overall data collection systems (with analytics), monitoring, and analysis for MTSS in order to track campus-level MTSS implementation and progress for students in intervention
    • Monitor the overall health of campus/regional MTSS structures and adjust support and accountability metrics based on need

Design MTSS professional development, coaching, and additional customized development and resources for regions and school leaders

    • Support the consistent implementation of evidence-based academic, behavior, and social-emotional interventions in Rocketship DC schools.
    • Create user-friendly resources that support school leaders in the implementation of these interventions.
    • Design and implement professional development opportunities to build school leader capacity to implement a multi-tiered system of supports in Rocketship schools.
    • Design and execute staff professional development opportunities related to MTSS (systems, structures, interventions, coaching, etc.) for a range of audiences (directors of schools, school leaders, MTSS Leads, teachers, etc.); ​​ 
    • Design and lead regular team meetings and routines, inspiring and supporting the DC regional MTSS teams and campus-based MTSS Leads to support the vision for MTSS in Rocketship schools.
    • Monitor the overall health of MTSS at DC schools with joint walkthrough to address growth areas, joint schedule creation, support for CPTs, PD customization and facilitation for summer PD and during the school year.
    • Problem-solve and provide resource support to DC DoS and Principals on the next steps for specific school sites.

Required Qualifications

    • At least 2 years of classroom teaching experience, with a demonstrated track record of excellent student achievement results. 
    • At least 2 years of school leadership experience, with a demonstrated record of successfully managing adults towards achievement outcomes preferred. 
    • Deep understanding of elementary instructional and pedagogical content in humanities and STEM
    • Experience designing strong and innovative professional development and adult learning opportunities at scale
    • Exceptionally strong collaboration skills; able to listen, learn, and understand content across teams within the organization and integrate diverse perspectives into the work 
    • Ability to engage and invest diverse stakeholders across multiple teams without direct authority
    • Ability to facilitate group and one on one programming that engages and inspires participants
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills
    • Prioritizes time and actions in alignment with organizational needs
    • Adaptable to changing goals and priorities (based on data) and ability to ask strategic questions to create a plan of action 
    • Ready to act and seize opportunities; drives personal growth and takes ownership over work
    • Demonstrated knowledge of, and support for, Rocketship’s mission, vision, and educational model
$100,000 - $120,000 a year
