Rural EMT

Gerlach, NV
Operations – Field Operations /
Full-Time /
On-site
Royal Ambulance is partnering with Washoe County to provide consistent, high-quality emergency care to Gerlach, NV—a remote community with a population of approximately 130, located near the Black Rock Desert. As a Rural EMT, you’ll serve as a lifeline for the town and surrounding areas, operating within a rugged environment that demands exceptional clinical skills, judgment, and adaptability.

This is not your typical EMT position. You’ll be embedded in a small, close-knit desert town, 120 miles from Reno. During Burning Man, that quiet population balloons into a full-blown city—and you’ll be at the epicenter of it all. As Royal also serves as the medical partner for Burning Man, this role will play a unique part in blending year-round Gerlach operations with Royal’s Burning Man/Rampart ops.

Embody the Royal Mindset:

    • We are Driven - We set a goal, identify a plan to achieve it, stay focused and motivated throughout the process, and reach our desired results, despite obstacles or challenges. We show initiative and commitment. We maintain a positive mindset and believe in ourselves and our abilities.
    • We are Empathetic - We are in tune with the feelings and actions of others and use that understanding to guide our actions, behaviors, and decisions. We are compassionate, perceptive, and mindful. We put ourselves in our patient's shoes and each other’s shoes and go above and beyond to ensure we treat everyone with dignity and respect.
    • We are Engaging - Our actions show our commitment to the organization and its goals. We care about the quality of our work and our fellow team members. We are enthusiastic and want to be involved within Royal and with our communities.
    • We are Adaptable - We are able to handle and adjust to change by being flexible in our process and mindset. We stay calm and do not fold under pressure when something changes, or a problem occurs. We develop a solution and can come up with an alternative plan despite the obstacles we are challenged with.

What you'll be doing:

    • Function within the scope of Nevada EMT clinical and operational protocols, adhering to Royal Ambulance Nevada standards and expectations.
    • Deliver high-quality patient care using critical thinking and maintaining composure under pressure.
    • Collaborate closely with the Gerlach Volunteer Fire Department, local volunteers, first responders, and community members.
    • Respond swiftly and safely via ambulance, quick response vehicles (QRV/4x4), or other necessary methods.
    • Maintain readiness and ensure all medical equipment and ambulances are clean, organized, and fully operational.
    • Provide community education and training support to local volunteer firefighters.
    • Complete clear and accurate patient care documentation and communicate effectively with receiving facilities.
    • Engage in continuous training, education, and team development.
    • Perform other public safety duties as assigned.

What you need to bring to the table:

    • At least 18 years or older
    • Valid Driver's License with acceptable driving record
    • Valid Nevada EMT certification with ambulance endorsement (Nationally Registered EMT with the ability to obtain Nevada certification prior to employment is acceptable)
    • Current and valid AHA BLS Certification
    • Completion of ICS-100, ICS-200, ICS-300, IS-015B, ICS-700, and IS-800 prior to employment
    • TB Test and Flu Shot (within the last year)
    • Immunization Records (Tdap, Varicella, HepB, and MMR within last 10 years)

Preferred Qualifications:

    • Prior EMT experience in rural, austere, or remote operational environments
    • Fire service experience or certifications (e.g., Firefighter I, Extrication)
    • EMS instructor experience
    • Prior Burning Man or similar event medical operations experience
    • Experience in communal living and close-quarter work environments

Physical Requirements:

    •  Required to sit, climb or balance, step, stoop, kneel, or crouch. Frequently lift/carry up to 150 pounds and occasionally up to 200 pounds.

Occupational Safety Risk for Infection Control:

    •  Risk of exposure to blood-borne pathogens: High Risk (Level 3).
$75,000 - $80,000 a year
