Rural Paramedic

Gerlach, NV
Operations – Field Operations /
Full-Time /
On-site
Royal Ambulance is partnering with Washoe County to provide consistent, high-quality emergency care to Gerlach, NV—a remote community with a population of approximately 130, located near the Black Rock Desert. As a Rural Paramedic, you’ll serve as a lifeline for the town and surrounding areas, operating within a rugged environment that demands exceptional clinical skills, judgment, and adaptability.

This is not your typical paramedic position. You’ll be embedded in a small, close-knit desert town, 120 miles from Reno. During Burning Man, that quiet population balloons into a full-blown city—and you’ll be at the epicenter of it all. As Royal also serves as the medical partner for Burning Man, this role will play a unique part in blending year-round Gerlach operations with Royal’s Burning Man/Rampart ops.

Objective of the Position:
Paramedics are responsible for delivering timely ALS responses across a vast and resource-limited response area, maintaining readiness, and collaborating closely with local first responders and community volunteers. Given the lower call volume (~100/year), this position involves additional training, community education, and preparedness activities.

Responsibilities (include but not limited to):

    • Prompt and reliable attendance; ensure constant preparedness for emergency responses.
    • Deliver high-quality Advanced Life Support (ALS) patient care according to Royal Ambulance Nevada protocols, procedures, and best practices.
    • Rapidly respond to emergency calls via ambulance, quick response vehicles (QRV/4x4), or other necessary methods.
    • Collaborate closely and professionally with Gerlach Volunteer Fire Department, community members, and other partner agencies.
    • Provide training and educational support to volunteer firefighters and community residents.
    • Maintain ambulances, equipment, and medical devices in clean, organized, response-ready conditions.
    • Clearly document patient care reports and communicate effectively with receiving facilities.
    • Participate actively in continuous education, team development, and training exercises.
    • Maintain confidentiality, professionalism, and composure during high-stress situations.
    • Engage with special events, notably the Burning Man festival, integrating regular duties with temporary operational expansions.
    • Handle protected health information (PHI) according to HIPAA standards.

Minimum Requirements:

    • Must be 18 years or older (for insurance purposes)
    • Valid Driver's License with acceptable driving record
    • Valid Nevada Paramedic License with ambulance endorsement (or nationally registered paramedic able to obtain Nevada license prior to employment start)

    • Current certifications in:
    • AHA BLS, ACLS, and PALS
    • Trauma certification (PHTLS or ITLS)
    • Completion of ICS-100, ICS-200, ICS-300, IS-015B, ICS-700, and IS-800 courses (prior to employment)
    • TB Test and Flu Shot (within the last year)
    • Immunization Records (Tdap, Varicella, HepB, and MMR within last 10 years)

Preferred Qualifications:

    • Prior experience as a medic in rural, austere, or remote operational environments
    • Prior fire service experience or certifications (e.g., Firefighter I, extrication)
    • EMS Instructor experience
    • Prior Burning Man event or similar event medical operations experience
    • Experience working and living in communal, close-quarter environments

Physical Requirements:

    •  This position involves sitting, climbing, balancing, stepping, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and frequently lifting/carrying up to 150 pounds (occasionally up to 200 pounds).

Occupational Safety Risk for Infection Control:

    •  Risk of exposure to blood-borne pathogens: High Risk (Level 3).
