This is a temporary position, located in the Black Rock Desert outside of Gerlach, NV. This position will provide medical care at the 2024 Burning Man Event between the dates of Aug 20th -Sep 6th. These positions will staff ALS ambulances and ALS quick response units at the event, are paid, and require Nevada licensure.

These positions require a high degree of endurance, flexibility, and ability to adapt and cope well with a harsh desert environment and rugged living conditions. Burning Man medical staff are responsible for their own transportation to and from the event site and for the meals and housing off shift. With prior notice, limited shared housing options and a staff camping area may be available. Responsibilities (include but not limited to):

    • Provides patient care in a variety of stationary (non-ambulance) and mobile (ambulance) settings within the Paramedic scope of practice.
    • Understands Royal's mission, values and quality standards by effectively demonstrating these core concepts in all interactions.
    • Provides advanced life support, including patient assessment, airway management, and use of a cardiac monitor defibrillator and medication administration in accordance with medical protocols.
    • Coordinates with dispatch to respond on foot or other non-vehicular means to the appropriate location using the most expeditious route.
    • Determines the nature and extent of illness or injury and establishes priority for required emergency care.
    • Understands all applicable legal, moral and ethical issues surrounding emergency medical service.
    • Prioritizes decisions and acts quickly in the best interest of the patient.
    • Administers medications within the Paramedic scope of practice as authorized by protocol.
    • Remains calm while working in difficult and stressful situations, and stays focused while carrying out the functions of the position. 
    • Constantly assesses the patient enroute to the emergency facility, administers additional care as indicated or directed by medical control.
    • Reports verbally and in writing, their observation and emergency medical care of the patient at the emergency scene and in transit, to the receiving medical facility staff for purposes of records and diagnostics.
    • Assists in lifting and carrying patients
    • Restocks and replaces used linens, blankets and other supplies as needed.
    • Cleans all equipment following appropriate disinfecting procedures.
    • Makes careful checks of all equipment so that that medical gear is ready for the next patient.
    • Identifies customer service opportunities through effective listening and through an understanding of the customers' needs.
    • Ensures that all equipment is clean, washed and kept in professional conditions.
    • Maintains a positive, courteous and respectful relationship with patients, customers and team members.

Minimum Requirments:

    • Age 18 or older
    • At least 1 year of recent 911 experience as a paramedic.
    • Possess a Valid Driver's License
    • Possess a Valid Nevada Paramedic license with ambulance endorsement or able to obtain by the start of Employment.  
    • Possess a Current and Valid AHA BLS, ACLS, and PALS
    • Driving Record must be acceptable
    • TB Test and Flu Shot (within the last year) - Must provide copy
    • Immunization Records: Tdap, Varicella, HepB, and MMR (within last 10 years)
    • Complete prior to employment: ICS-100, ICS-00003, ICS-700, & IS 800
    • Complete a ninety-minute Burning Man Medical Orientation prior to hire date.
    • Must work a minimum of three 12-hour shifts during the operational period.

Preferred Requirments:

    • Experience working in a solo medic system. 
    • Experience working with hospital staff and as part of an integrated care team.
    • Prior Burning Man experience
    • Prior experience in a communal living and close-quarters working environment

Physical Requirements:

    • The Paramedic is required to sit; climb or balance; step, stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must frequently lift and/or carry up to 150 pounds and occasionally lift and/or carry up to 200 pounds.

Occupational Safety Risk for Infection Control:

    • Risk to exposure from blood borne pathogens – 3 High Risk

    • The Paramedic will be working regularly with confidential patient and personnel information.  The Paramedic  must have the ability to maintain composure and tact in stressful situations.  Must possess the ability to communicate effectively in writing, verbally,and through radio and telephone communications.  Must possess the ability to demonstrate compassion and a sincerededication to patient needs, concerns and information confidentiality.

Pay and Benefits

    • These are temporary positions which will terminate on or after September 6, 2024. Employees will be provided with a credential enabling them to enter the Burning Man Event. 
    • When not working, Employees will be free to enjoy all that Black Rock City has to offer. Burning Man medical employees are responsible for their transportion to and from the event site.
    • Shared housing (shift pods or bunkhouse) may be available on a first come first serve basis for those employees who choose to work four or more shifts during the event.
    • Meals are provided on shift only, although Royal may have a staff camp meal plan option available. Preference will be given to participants who are attending or have attended Burning Man and have the ability to be self sufficient when not working.
    • Paramedic positions at Burning Man are paid at $28.00/hr and in accordance with Nevada State Laws.
