The Opportunity

The International Workforce Programs Specialist is responsible for preparing international students in generating internships, practicums, and other forms of experiential education.  Working collaboratively with the academic units, the International Workforce Programs Specialist develops and facilitates programing and opportunities in career development that is relevant to the students’ field of study and interests.  The International Workforce Programs Specialist provides individual coaching to students as they develop their personal action plans, as well as overall case management that extends throughout the students’ workplace experience and helps to ensure that desired learning outcomes are being achieved. To help increase international student competencies in navigating employment search, how to write an application, preparing for interviews, and employment and professional transition.

The incumbent will oversee all aspects of the work placement process including facilitating professional workshops, advising students, and managing employer relations. In addition, utilize SAIT partners both international and external to create or open more opportunities for Work Integrated Learning (WIL) placements for international students.

Educate SAIT and external employment groups on international students’ role within the labour market, including IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) work permits, immigration pathways, Post Grad Work Permits (PGWP). In addition, sharing the current trends within the international student population as they pertain to the Canadian job market and prognosis, and the benefits of providing international students with employment.

The International Workforce Programs Specialist develops industry partnerships and supports employers in creating appropriate placement experiences. Assist the Team Lead, International Student Support with achieving goals of the department and SAIT, specifically to creating career-ready international students and integrating employability skills for this student population. This role will work closely and collaboratively with the team and Manager of Career Advancement Services. Utilizing the resources and supports through the Career Advancement Services department to support International Students and their integration into the Canadian workforce.

Note: This is a temporary full time position for 2 years. 

The Role


    • Career Guidance
    • Advise current students on the educational experiences to help with their career development through personal action plans to help turn international students into skilled and job-ready employees
    • Design and implement career preparation activities, resources and career events for international students involved the job search:
    • Resume writing
    • Interview skills
    • Professional dress code, and more.
    • Develop and facilitate career skills workshops and panels in person and online
    • Develop electronic resources and website content to support students in career skills
    • Use expert knowledge of careers information and labour market information and intelligence to enable international students to identify, access, interpret and utilize information that is relevant to them, including the appropriate use of information technology, e.g. social media, and web-based information sources
    • Challenge and support international students to make informed, realistic and adaptable career decisions

    • Networking, Consultancy & Advocacy
    • Support program development by identifying market trends/opportunities for employment-based training and placements where applicable
    • Liaise, communicate and build relationships with workplace partners
    • Develop and cultivate relationships with potential employers through cold calling, mailing, networking, and site visits
    • Develop and maintain file and database structures to track career pathways and potential industry partnerships
    • Liaise with internal partners regarding career activities and supports
    • Develop and facilitate career skills workshops and panels in person and online
    • Develop electronic resources and website content to support students in career skills

    • Research and Data Collection
    • Monitor research and market analysis to understand current and emerging trends in the employment market
    • Document program progress, and achievements in annual and regular reports
    • To reflect on practice and engage in continuous professional development to further develop the skills and knowledge required to provide employment guidance to international students and to keep up to date with developments in the labour market.
    • Ability to understand the current landscape with regards to international student transitional needs and to provide evidence-based recommendations about trends and/or potential new program areas
    • Able to capture, manage, analyze and report on program data and how to provide recommendations based on the evidence available

Qualifications

    • Minimum of 3 years experience required; 5 years’ experience preferred)
    • Current experience in working with students, with a particular focus on career advising and work placement programming
    • Post-secondary certificate, diploma, or degree; in a relevant field (business, human resources, education)
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (especially Excel, Word, Outlook, and preferably Access)
    • Expertise in market analysis, public speaking and external engagement considered an asset
    • Time management skills and the ability to multi-task and set priorities are essential
    • Discreet and tactful with sensitive information
    • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and cultures.
    • Able to respond quickly to changing situations and needs of the programs and participants
    • Able to work well in a team and independently
    • Strong writing and editing skills
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
    • Exceptional interpersonal skills
    • Self-motivated and driven
    • Punctual and able to adapt to a changing schedule is a must
    • Ability to work evenings or weekends when necessary to meet the needs of Head Start program
