The School of Health and Public Safety at SAIT prepares students for a dynamic career in the health care sector. We offer specialized training in diagnostic and therapeutic technologies, professional assistant programs, information management, and training for wellness professionals. Our programs are hands on, with students and instructors immersed in living classrooms and simulated training. 

The Opportunity

The School of Health & Public Safety at SAIT requires an energetic and resourceful individual with excellent organizational and teamwork skills to support the Vision Care Science Program. We are seeking an experienced professional from the optician field who is enthusiastic about contributing to student learning by ensuring labs, equipment, and assessments are well-prepared and aligned with industry standards.

The successful candidate will bring a solid understanding of optical dispensing, lens fabrication, and the opticianry profession, along with practical experience in ordering and maintaining specialized equipment and supplies. They will thrive in a collaborative, fast-paced environment and demonstrate a commitment to professionalism, safety, and continuous improvement.

Note: This is a part-time casual position, two days per week (10-15 hours per week), with an end date of March 31, 2026.

The Role

    • Collaborate with instructors and program staff to determine course, lab, and assessment needs.
    • Order, receive, and maintain inventory of optical supplies, tools, and equipment.
    • Prepare and implement lab plans, including setup, support, and takedown for practical classes and assessments.
    • Manage annual equipment maintenance requirements, including calibration and troubleshooting of optical instruments.
    • Monitor and operate within program supply budgets.
    • Initiate supply and equipment orders with Academic Chair approval.
    • Maintain a safe and organized laboratory environment, adhering to applicable safety protocols.
    • Provide technical support to faculty and students during lab sessions.
    • Track and document equipment usage, repairs, and capital asset inventory.
    • Build and maintain vendor relationships to source supplies and obtain competitive quotes.
    • Promote a positive, team-oriented environment.
    • Provide feedback for continuous program improvement.
    • Support other Educational Technologists in the School of Health and Public Safety as needed.
    • Participate in program, School, and SAIT meetings and events.

Qualifications & Experience

    • Diploma or certificate in Opticianry or related field.
    • Minimum two years of recent, relevant experience in the optician field, in retail, clinic, or lab setting.
    • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.
    • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
    • Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Competence in basic computer applications (Word, Excel, email, internet).
    • Flexible schedule to accommodate program timetables.
    • Experience in an educational or training environment.
    • Knowledge of Vision Care Science instructional requirements and lab safety procedures.

Hourly Rate: $29.86 - $33.75
