The Opportunity

The Reg Erhardt Library facilitates excellence in teaching, research, and learning through the provision of authoritative information resources and community-driven programs. By providing equitable access to print and digital collections, innovative technology, and learner-focused spaces, the Library creates an inclusive environment which supports creative inquiry at SAIT.
 
Reporting to the User Services Coordinator, the Information Desk Technician is a member of the Reg Erhardt Library’s User Services Team, focused on providing frontline library and information services to students, staff, faculty and visitors to SAIT, consistent with the Library’s policies and procedures. The Information Desk Technician will also contribute to various projects for the evening/weekend team.
 
The Information Desk Technician is expected to make decisions independently, balancing operational needs with patron-focused service and in line with established expectations and guidelines set by the User Services Coordinator. They are also comfortable working in a public space serving a diverse community of library patrons, during hours when they may have limited support from specialist library staff or other SAIT departments. The Information Desk Technician will meet a variety of public service situations with competence and empathy. 

This position primarily works weekday afternoons and evenings.

The Role

    • Patron Services:
    • Circulation services
    • Basic reference
    • Assistance with library services
    • Referrals to other supports with the library, SAIT or the community
    • Keeping the User Services Coordinator informed on evening/weekend service.

    • Library Community and Safety:
    • Ensuring the library is a welcoming and safe space
    • Enforcing library expectations and SAIT Policies
    • Coordinating, as needed, with Campus Security
    • Reporting or escalating issues to the User Services Coordinator

    • Technical Assistance:
    • Explaining printing and other technology services to patrons
    • Providing basic troubleshooting for workstations and other technologies in the library
    • Overseeing shelvers
    • Answering basic questions from shelvers about tasks
    • Keeping the User Services Coordinator informed about shelving work completed and other items as needed.

    • Non-Public Service Tasks:
    • Preparing Print Material for shelving
    • Selecting materials for library collections
    • Entering analytics data
    • Maintaining equipment and collections
    • Other duties as assigned

    • Projects:
    • Coordinating and contributing to projects that bridge across evening staff
    • Supporting casual Information Desk staff through project work

Qualifications

    • Education & Experience
    • Minimum                           
    • A Library Information Technology diploma, or a combination of equivalent education and experience may be considered.
    • Preferred
    • At least 3 years working public service at a library or similar institution.

    • Skills Required
    • Familiarity with library collections and the importance of access for students and staff.
    • Knowledge of contemporary reference and information sources.
    • Familiarity with library systems, operations and practices, including the use of systems such as Alma and LibApps.
    • Experience working in a large public space with diverse patrons.
    • Experience equitably enforcing policies and processes within a busy library.
    • Demonstrated customer service experience with the ability to problem solve.
    • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in a variety of written and verbal mediums, such as in-person, online chat, and email.

Salary Range: $43,713.15 - $55,060.85
