The Opportunity:
Our Team Leads play an integral role in the coordination of student centric programming, planning, servicing and delivery as the Athletics & Recreation department strives to create an active, engaging and responsive environment of recreational and competitive pursuits.
 
To succeed as a department dependent on part-time workers, Athletics & Recreation management relies on the competencies of Team Leads that are responsible for program components and experiential deliverables, as well as the educating and re-educating of employees as required. Team Leads handle employee related structure, concerns and demands while contributing to the job ready graduate and experiential learning demands of our SAIT brand promise.
 
Team Leads contribute on the Athletics & Recreation leadership team, drive a Campus Life agenda, build upon a strong history of student activity on the SAIT campus and enhance social engagement objectives in an innovative fashion where all SAIT students can find themselves as part of the #WeAreTrojans brand of programming options.
 
Sport & Activity programming at SAIT is divided through specific, yet overlapping portfolios based on the experience and competencies of team members:
o   Student Activities & Campus Engagement (focus areas include club sport coordination, intramurals, fitness offerings & campus engagement)
The dynamic department of Athletics & Recreation, and this position require leadership, supervision, innovation, quick thinking, program coverage, communication & independent problem solving.
Evening & weekend work is required. 

The Role

    • Part-time employee recruitment, administration & coordination (hiring, training, mentoring, scheduling & performance management)
    • Performance management, Intervention and Adaptation as deemed necessary when leading a team of team leads, employees and volunteers
    • Enhance a culture that resolves concerns, issues and uncomfortable situations in a timely fashion in accordance with appropriate compliance, policies, and procedures
    • Intentional Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) focused decision making, promotion and approachability
    • Supervision of student participants, activities, events and projects as required
    • Student intern and co-curricular coordination, mentorship and coaching as required
    • Manage a menu of sport and activity programming including Intramural, Extramural and Varsity opportunities
    • Contribute to employee wellness initiatives
    • Ability to establish effective working relationships as a contributing team member of athletics & recreation with SAIT, ACAC/CCAA & other stakeholders
    • Project management approach to hosting/welcoming other franchises/institutions to our campus community
    • Club sport coordination – creation, supervision & direction of club sports, with an emphasis on Esports
    • Celebrations, special event collaborations and proposal related opportunities
    • Student engagement, co-curricular project management and mentorship as required
    • Software interactions with sport governing bodies as required
    • Support Trojans teams around logistics, scheduling, staffing, travel, accommodations, equipment and nutrition related provisions and planning as requested
    • Contribute on committees with Campus wide initiatives, priorities and scale
    • Contribute on committees with Provincial, National and International scale
    • Support SAIT’s & provide direction on departments environmental health, safety & wellness initiatives
    • Balance sport excellence with innovation, learning moments and interventions
    • Business acumen, budgeting, auditing, expenditure coordination and financial reporting as required including capital equipment & operational inventory controls
    • Responsible for financial planning, monitoring & management of assigned areas.
    • Advancing community sport and stakeholder relations as impacted by post-secondary participation opportunities and relationships
    • Public speaking, strategic storytelling compositions and engagement efforts
    • Promotions, production and broadcasting coordination
    • Support the development of collaborative partnerships which promote innovation
    • Student activity content creation and outward facing communications as required
    • Other administrative support including website, statistics and storytelling as required

Qualifications & Experience

    • Minimum Required
    • Bachelor’s degree with an emphasis on Recreation, Business and/or Event Management or related field
    • 3-5 years of direct experience working in recreation and/or fitness or event management capacity with supervisory responsibilities 
    • Respect in Sport training.

    • Preferred
    • University degree in Recreation Management  
    • University sport participation, coaching experience at a high level, officiating and/or sport administration experiences
    • Advanced certifications in coaching and/or a sport related field
    • Standard First Aid & CPR
    • Officiating Level(s)

Skills Required

    • A successful candidate will have the following skills or traits: time management, effective communication, proactive & innovative, a desire to improve current processes & challenge the status quo
    • Ability to focus on multiple projects, initiatives or events simultaneously, while maintaining professional communication with all stakeholders, while driving the departments strategic initiatives.
    • Demonstrated ability to complete flexible hours including evenings and weekends as work demands and requirements are deemed normative sporting behavior
    • Demonstrated willingness to program alongside fund development opportunities that can occur in association with Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission (AGLC)
    • Demonstrated considerable public speaking and social media facing interactions and skills
    • Demonstrated bilingual or multilingual abilities to engage with SAIT students and stakeholders
    • Demonstrated understanding of specific sport rules and administration through a continuum of sport experiences
    • Demonstrated progressively responsible and relevant experience with a minimum of 3-5 years escalation which has included at least a year of supervisory demands
    • Demonstrated lifelong learning behaviors with an openness to upgrading and training to include but limited to SafeSport, Respect in Sport, Standard First Aid & Basic Rescuer CPR
    • Demonstrated experience in training and supervision of multiple part-time staff including sport officials, instructors, volunteers, and supervisors.
    • Demonstrated commitment to and appreciation of diversity, cultural competence and global perspectives.
    • Demonstrated ability to adapt to changing priorities, situations and demands.
    • Demonstrated experience delivering programming that maximizes the student learning, student cohesion, student competition and student social experience as intended and invested upon
