About the job
At Scaleway, we provide a large scope of cloud products to our customers. From dedicated servers to virtual machines, and bare metal cloud servers, storage solutions and many others.
Hardware Engineering is a rapidly growing department at the heart of Scaleway’s infrastructure, offering a vast array of servers to our customers and internal teams. The Hardware Engineering department is responsible for most of the hardware activities of the company; from R&D and qualification to prototyping and rack level design, from tool development to hardware support, from designing to selection and documentation.
The Hardware Architect has a pivotal role interacting with Product, Engineering, and Operations teams, as well as liaising with the different manufacturers. Our objective is to provide our customers with the best products and solutions and ensure that they are built with the most adequate and reliable hardware. This implies that we must always be a few steps ahead so we can offer best-of-breed solutions, and bring them to market. Hence, we are always looking at next generation platforms and opportunities for our products.
Reporting to the VP Hardware Engineering, your role will be to propose and assess technologies and systems from different manufacturers, develop server hardware solutions, PoC integration and validation, hands-on testing. Your input will be essential ahead of the qualification and production phases to finalize design, validate serviceability, define service levels, and industrialize the production of new offers.
Responsibilities
- Conduct research and evaluations based on the input from the Product, R&D and Innovation teams.
- Identify possible server hardware OEM or ODM solutions and the relevant components (DIMMs, HBAs, Storage, NICs, GPUs, DPUs, …).
- Design, build and evaluate server hardware prototypes from the identified solutions; answering the upstream teams’ business case (HPC, baremetal, cloud, storage, AI, etc. products).
- Evaluate and validate HPC architecture with the vendors.
- Ensure that functionality and performance meet design specifications.
- Document the technologies, findings, and results to support successful qualification.
- Engage stakeholders (Engineering, Product, Hardware Engineering, Operations teams) in order to stay aligned.
- Engagement with OEM and ODM and upstream stakeholders for next generation technologies.
- Help train all the teams on how hardware functions.
What makes you successful ?
Some experience in the following topics :
Advanced knowledge of server hardware technology
- Computer architectures (AMD, ARM, Intel, Nvidia, …)
- Various types of technology and components (DIMM, CPU, storage drives, NICs, HBA, DPUs, …)
- Familiarity with Open Compute Project (OCP)
Good knowledge of the system level
- BMC and Firmware management (Redfish, IPMI)
- Linux-based environments and general system administration (PXE, grub, kernel, …)
- Familiarity with OpenBMC
Knowledge of HPC/AI architecture
- interconnect topologies and protocols
- high performance and distributed storage
- firmware management and monitoring
- jobs scheduling and benchmarking
Understanding of the datacenter constraints
- power & cooling (air and liquid) constraints at the rack and datacenter level
The Hardware Architect manages mid and long term technical projects and can summarize/document for a non-technical audience.
The applicants must demonstrate good communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work cross-functionally and full English-language proficiency.
