Seasonal Farm Chef Residency

Newport, RI
Ocean Hour Farm – Ocean Hour Farm Operations /
Temporary /
Ocean Hour Farm is comprised of 45 acres of bucolic, coastal pastures, and a historic stone village, creating a setting that transports visitors' minds and imagination as soon as they step foot through the gate. The mission of Ocean Hour Farm is to serve as a center for education, scientific research, and demonstration of regenerative agricultural practices, highlighting the critical connection between land and ocean health. Ocean Hour Farm will provide a living example of sustainable agriculture and land stewardship – an integrated system where plants, animals, and people sequester carbon, clean stormwater, build soil, and produce food and fiber for the community.

The 2024 Seasonal Farm Chef Resident is responsible for implementing and maintaining all aspects of the inaugural culinary program at OHF which will feed the farm staff and visitors largely from our own farm product. This person will work with other staff members as well as contractors, volunteers, researchers, educational participants, and other members of our regional food and farm economy.

Goals of the Program

1. Utilize as much of the farm production as possible in meal program for the farm while minimizing waste
2. Educate and inspire staff, visitors (including food systems professionals, farming community, ownership,
youth summer campers), the community and beyond about cooking good food with regenerative farm product
3. Collaborate with Guest Chefs for special programming

Deliverables of the Program

1. Staff lunches during workdays utilizing both cultivated and wild farm product
2. Update staff snacks program to offer farm sourced snacks where possible
3. Collaborate on design and produce at least 2 farm dinners (Peak Summer Harvest/Fall Equinox) for
the full farm community
4. Produce value-added products from farm product for year-round consumption

OHF is one of the last remaining intact farms on the south end of Aquidneck Island. The rugged and rolling terrain provides a unique character and is often the first impression visitors to the area have of regenerative practices. Creating healthy, beautiful food from these practices is key to our work. A strong interest in farm to table systems that support the regional food and fiber economy in relationship to ecosystem functioning, as well as human and ocean health, is essential to this position.
