The Data Practice Director is responsible for defining, growing, and delivering a differentiated data capability at SEP. This role blends strategic consulting, technical expertise, and organizational leadership to build a data-focused offering that complements SEP’s core software development services.
While this role does not include direct people management, it is a leadership position with significant influence. The Data Practice Director will provide mentorship, career path guidance, and technical direction to data-focused individual contributors, while also doing the hands-on work necessary to build and evolve the practice.
This role has responsibilities in 5 key areas:
1. Practice Development & Strategy
- Define and evolve SEP’s data services offering across data engineering, analytics, platforms, governance, and AI/ML enablement.
- Build and refine a scalable, repeatable data services offering aligned with SEP’s software design & development services .
- Establish internal best practices, delivery frameworks, and quality standards for data-centric engagements.
- Lead by example through hands-on contributions to early engagements and capability-building efforts
2. Business Development & Marketing Support
- Partner with Engagement Managers and delivery leaders to support business development activities.
- Engage with clients to understand business needs, shape proposals, and present data-centric solutions.
- Contribute to SEP go-to-market strategies, thought leadership, and capability positioning for target markets.
- Collaborate with our marketing team to develop branding, messaging, and content that highlights SEP’s data capabilities and associated data services offering.
- Act as a trusted advisor in early-stage client conversations, helping shape vision and strategy.
- Identify opportunities to support data capability into existing client engagements and internal initiatives.
3. Client Engagement & Delivery
- Provide strategic oversight and technical direction on data engagements to ensure client success.
- Guide delivery teams on best practices in data architecture, governance, engineering, and platform implementation.
- Support continuous improvement of delivery models and methodologies for data services.
- Work closely with software engineering, design, and product leaders to ensure data services are well-integrated into SEP’s broader delivery ecosystem
4. Capability Growth & Mentorship
- Mentor and support the growth of data-centric individual contributors, including AI across SEP.
- Collaborate with talent and delivery leaders to define career paths, learning opportunities, and skill development plans for data practitioners.
- Support recruiting and interview activities for data practitioner candidates.
- Lead or participate in internal communities of practice focused on data and analytics.
- Develop and deliver internal training, workshops, or resources to upskill SEP team members on data-related topics
5. Thought Leadership
- Monitor and interpret emerging trends in data, AI/ML, and analytics to ensure SEP remains fit for market—advising executive leadership, shaping service offerings, and guiding internal training to align with future industry demands.
- Represent SEP’s data capability at industry events, conferences, or other community events
- Produce content (e.g., white papers, blog posts, or case studies) that showcase SEP’s approach to solving data challenges.
Qualifications
- Extensive experience in data strategy, architecture, OCM, engineering, or analytics, ideally in a consulting or services environment.
- Strong understanding of modern data platforms, cloud technologies, and AI/ML applications.
- Proven ability to lead through influence, mentor others, and build technical capabilities without direct management authority.
- Excellent communication and client-facing skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts into business value.
- Experience building or scaling a data practice or capability is highly desirable.
- A growth mindset with a passion for learning, teaching, and evolving practices over time.
