Working at the Southeast Personal Care Home, the food service attendant is a member of the Food Services team. Directly accountable to the Manager of Support Services, the food service attendant performs all duties in accordance with established health and safety regulations/guidelines, policies and procedures (e.g. utilizing personal, protective equipment as per safe work procedures). Notifies the Manager of support Services of all occurrences, injuries illnesses or safety and health concerns which are likely to harm themselves, their co-workers, or any others who enter the premises.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Performs food preparation tasks including salad and sandwich production and other related food preparation assigned by cooks (eg: washing, prepping and storing of vegetables and fruits).
- Assists in maintaining cost control through portion control, careful storage and usage of food items.
- Assists in preparation and execution of special event meals and catering functions.
- Provides courteous service to Residents, staff, volunteers and visitors.
- Provides food services to Residents during meal times, which include portioning and serving meals and beverages according to the menu.
- Serves the correct therapeutic diet to each Resident according to menu and Resident preference(s). Follows Resident diet information sheets.
- Promotes Resident independence through appropriate set up assistance in a dignified, safe manner with provision of any assistive devices as required.
- Loads, delivers and unloads meals service carts to units.
- Sets up and cleans Resident tables in dining areas before and after meal service.
- Operates dispensing machines; puts away and brings out supplies as required.
- Performs established cleaning and storage procedures of dishes, utensils, bins, pots and other related equipment, as assigned.
- Performs established procedures for receiving food deliveries and immediate storage of perishable food items, including stock rotation. Notifies Manager of Support Services of any damaged, short, or incorrect food items received.
- Follows safe work practices to reduce or eliminate injury/harm.
- Responsible for cleanliness and sanitation of work area and equipment as per routines and Infection Control guidelines.
- Performs and signs off on dietary duties as assigned.
- Reports equipment requiring repair or safety hazards to Manager of Support Services or Maintenance department. Removes any malfunctioning or damaged equipment.
- Responsible for the cleanliness and sanitation of work area and equipment.

- Understands and adheres with the policies and procedures of Southeast Personal Care Home and the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority that relate to performing the Food Service Attendant position to promote a safe environment.
- Complies with all safety & health regulations (Workplace Safety & Health, WHIMS, MSDS, Body Mechanic’s, Infection Control) when performing duties.
- Understands and supports the Mission, Vision, Values and policies of Southeast Personal Care Home.
- Maintains privacy and confidentiality. Compliant with Protection for Persons in Care legislation.
- Conducts self in mature, responsible, pleasant manner and displays a positive work ethic.
- Participates in orientation and training of Laundry personnel.
- Assists others to complete tasks supporting a team environment. Promotes facility wide team approach through active cooperation with all staff.
- Advocates for a respectful environment, recognizing individual uniqueness. Maintains dignity and respect for all Residents, families, and co-workers, etc.
- Maintains competency level by attending staff meetings, in-service programs or seminars as required.
- Participates in Quality Program/Risk Management program by participating in audits.
- Records temperatures of food items, refrigeration units, and dish machine on a daily basis.
- Contributes to improving food services for Residents and staff by bringing concerns forward, information sharing and making suggestions for improvement.

Other Responsibilities
Education
- Successful completion of the City of Winnipeg’s Food Handler Certificate Training Program. This pre-requisite must be attained before the end of the 90-day probationary period.
- Minimum Grade 10, Manitoba standards, education required.
Experience and Qualifications
- Minimum of one (1) year experience in a long-term care setting preferred.
- Ability to carry our duties in a professional manner, working under minimum supervision and in compliance with confidentiality of facility and Residents.
- Ability to operate related equipment.
- Demonstrates effective organizational skills with the ability to problem solve.
- Demonstrates effective communication skills, both written and oral, in the English language.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills with staff, other disciplines, and external agencies to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Able to accept constructive criticism.
- Must be able to function effectively in a stressful environment with frequent interruptions.
- Demonstrates the ability to manage conflict and build teams. May encounter aggressive and/or agitated residents and/or visitors.
- Ability to adapt readily to a changing environment and respond with initiative and enthusiasm.
- Demonstrates effective time management skills and able to prioritize accordingly.
- Maintain a clean, neat appearance, remaining compliant to dress code.
- Interested in the elderly, and in working to uphold the concepts of teamwork in caring for the needs of the residents’.
- Completes mandatory education.
- Must be mentally and physically healthy to meet the demands of the position. Position involves physical activities such as standing, transferring and transporting food items and equipment.
- Must be able to arrive punctually and prepared to work.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain a satisfactory employment record, including attendance.
- A current Criminal Record Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check deemed satisfactory by Southeast Personal care Home.
