Shaper is developing a revolutionary line of computer-augmented power tools, starting with a handheld CNC router called Origin. We're looking for an eager Electrical Engineering intern to join us for 10-12 weeks over Summer 2019 at our San Francisco HQ. You’ll work on a variety of tasks including factory hardware development, new product prototyping, compliance testing, PCB layout, product performance analysis, and more! At Shaper, interns are given real deliverables that impact our ability to manufacture and design new products - all interns are expected to contribute to our company’s success in the same way we expect our full-time employees to.

The Job

    • Conceptualize new products, prototypes, and factory fixture electrical designs
    • Perform part selection, schematic capture, PCB layout (using Altium Designer), DFM (Design for Manufacturing), and see boards through to manufacturing
    • Execute DOEs (Design of Experiment) for things ranging from prototype EMI compliance to factory assembly procedures
    • Write detailed design plans and documentation
    • Write testing software to automate analysis of your designs (Python, Bash, C++, Arduino)

You

    • Experience doing schematic capture and PCB layout
    • A strong understanding of fundamental E&M concepts, analog circuit design, digital logic, and computer architecture design
    • Experience with robotics (mechatronics, control systems design/algorithms, sensors)
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills (English)
    • Familiarity working with microcontroller systems (like Arduino or bare metal 8-bit, 16-bit, or 32-bit ARM MCUs)
    • Experience in working with embedded linux systems like the Raspberry Pi or BeagleBone
    • Excellent at hand-soldering, down to 0201-sized passive components
    • Good problem solving and debugging skills
    • You’re excited to explore an entirely new field and develop products that real users will depend on!

Bonus Points

    • Comfortable working with Altium Designer
    • Have designed production-quality circuit boards
    • Experience writing Python and working in existing codebases
    • Experience working with Yocto and i.MX6 application processors
    • You like building things with your hands
